Not top of the line, but Upgradeable for future...

Here is the future machine. I don't want top of the line, just a good system that is upgradeable in the future. I don't want a loud machine (I already have that now...).

So I guess I am looking at good bank for the buck. Check my signature for my current system and you will see where I am at right now.

I am a gamer but not a serious overclocker (will try though).

Looking to purchase ASAP but am concerned about the P5B after reading through this forum...

Core 2 Duo E6300 = $183.00
Corsair XMS2 2x1GB kit - PC2 6400 = $254 (after $40 rebate)
Enermax 600w PSU = $129.99
Sapphire X1900XT 256mb = $239.99
Asus P5B LGA775 MoBo = $146.99

Any feedback on this machine?

if you do go with the x1900xt, then you may want to go with an aftermarket cooler for it as those tend to be noisy.

I was initially going to go with an eVGA 7600 or 7900 for $149 or $200 repectively but was suggested to get the X1900.

I only run a 17" LCD so its not like I am going for HUGE screens with hig resolution.

Therefore maybe the 7600 or 7900 would be fine?

well the x1900xt will demolish the 7600 & 7900.
I assume that the res you'll be using is 1280x1024?
I'd still go with the ATI because with newer games, even @ 1280x1024 with some eye candy they can be pretty demanding

I'm just saying pick up an aftermarket cooler for it & that'll quiet it down tremendously
(i believe the Xcelero or the Zalman are the one most people go for...with the Zalman being the quieter of the 2)

Just an observation, according to your initial post, you are looking for a machine "that is upgradeable in the future." But, based on your sig, I would say that you don't upgrade all that often. So, my point is that you might want to consider getting the best GPU you can afford now as the complexity of new games and their demands on the graphics system seem to be rapidly increasing. The rest of the machine will most likely do fine for the near future.

I don't ususally reccomend spending more on hardware than you need to do the job but, as I said, given your apparent upgrade cycle, the best bang for the buck in this case would be to go for the best you can afford.

You are absolutely correct...it takes a few years for me to get to the upgrade...and by that point it usually means - replace the core components and pass the old ones down to the kids.

So, are you suggesting the X1900XT is the thing to stick with? The more I read about it on other sites, the more I think I will keep it in the line up.

As for cooling - I think I need to invest some time in figuring out how to vent my SupoerMicro full tower case...instead of sticking 5 fans in it/on it/around it...

if possible, try and modify your case for 120mm fans, they'll move more air @ lower RPM's than 80 or 92mm fans

1152x854 is the max I seem to be able to run at... Hyundai Imagequest L70S.

that doesn't make any sense...

http://www.hyundaiq.com/pro_l70s.asp

says 1280x1024 on there & surely the 9800 can do that

...thanks! I used the ATI Catalyst control panel and actually got it there. i thought I had tried it before through the RIGHT-CLICK (desktop) properties and it didn't work. But this actually looks good!

Right on - how about this:
Ok...changing my thoughts here and I am thinking of going SLI with two 7600 or 7900's.
