Try restarting xorg. If you're using proprietary drivers, I'd recommend switching to the libre version. They generally aren't as good for things like gaming, but ime, they work better for routine desktop use.

That actually does look like when I had a bad video card driver lol. I had to switch out the whole video card because the driver was so unstable.
