I'm learning! :) I'm taking Intro to American Politics, and learning about how our country is governed has been fun so far. I'm currently writing a paper on Liberal vs Conservative, and which one I believe I am. I'm starting to see why politics can spark such huge debates, especially on this board. So far I've got it like this:

Conservatives want to increase the govt's boundaries as far as rights go
Liberals believe in giving more responsabilities and choices to the public

am I on the right track so far? (if not, I may have more trouble with this class than I originally thought :p)

The polical philosophies might be different, but the actual politicians are one and the same

no, both parties are basically flaming hypocrites.... i'm serious. not trying to start a flame war or anything...

conservatives - against big government when it's convenient
liberals - for big government when it's convenient

as you can see, they are fundamentally the same.... it's just a matter of what is "convenient".

for example conservatives like guns and hate casual sex.... so they're against gun control (government is too intrusive!) yet they're for censorship via FCC (trash! rubbish! filth! protect our darling children...)

liberals meanwhile.... they feel sorry for poor people but they're also hippies, so they're for social welfare programs (more money to the poor! more money to the poor! tax the rich!) whle they're against military spending (government spending is out of control!)

So conservatives are more likely to spend money??

in general, no. conservatives are usually richer than liberals (generalization, yes), and want to keep the money they make. so they don't like taxes, or things that would cause an increase in taxes. so no, conservatives are not more likely to spend money. obviously, they do for different reasons... but usually, no.
