Don't need anything super fancy, just basic communications. Looking more for brand recommendations and reliability reports/user experiences from others out there with theirs. Caller ID and answering machine are unnecessary, but won't rule any good units out.

On the low end, it seems to be V-Tech and Northwestern Bell, are these reasonable solutions or just cheap crap? Thanks in advance...

Go with 900 MHz, not 2400 MHz (2.4 GHz). 2.4 GHz is nothing more than a gimmick. There is little benefit for the added cost. Microwave ovens (which cook at 2400 MHz) and wireless networking equipment interfere with the 2.4 GHz models. Make sure it has digital voice transmission, not just a "digital security code". Digital spread spectrum (DSS) is even better.

The 2.4 GHz phones are also prone to interfering with DSL service, even if they are filtered.

I'd go with a 900 MHz phone. I've never used one of the digital models, but stay away from any of the AT&T brand analog models. I own one, and have used several others, and they are all crap.

I own three Panasonic KX-TC series 900MHz and one Uniden TRU346 2.4 GHz. I've purchased and returned Sony and V-Tech units. Panasonic is the best sounding at both ends, and the most comfortable. Buy it from Staples using a coupon. That's the best bang for the buck you'll find, IMO.
