I'm getting a new pc, and i have come up with two possible builds. One is a Core 2 Duo build, the other an AMD64.

Core 2 Specs:
E6400
6800agp
1gb ddr533 ram
asrock 775 dual-vsta mobo

AMD64:
amd64 3500
x1800xt
asrock 939dual-sata2 mobo
1 gb ddr400 ram

i will be using the computer to play high-end games, video edit, and other such things

help is appreciated, thanks alot!
 
Gah? That's the most horrifically mismatched build i've seen all day!

C2D 6300
Gigabyte 965P DS3
1GB RAM
7600GS/7600GT

For gaming your AMD system is far better. IF you recode video and spend hours waiting for the jobs to process then the C2D is better at that (by a mile). What's your budget and are you overclocking?
 
Fair enough.

3500 AM2 : $90 (Inc heatsink)
M2N-E : $91
2GB DDR2 533 (PC 4200): $154
7600GT: $115

Total: $450

So that's $50 left, might be able to get a slightly faster GPU or CPU, or just spend it on crisps (and i'd get a 400W fortron, just for comfort's sake)

I think you're just too low on the budget to go for a core 2 duo, it's not the end of the world, you don't need more than a 3500 for gaming unless you're spending a fortune on graphics cards.
 
Yeah i edited, and have just realised i can't do basic maths anymore.

I think your best/only real option is the AMD one. It'll be a nice computer that way.
 
keep an eye on the FS/FT forums. Some of us upgrade often and sell old (but still really high end) hardware there.

OK, i found an extremely low-budget am2 mainboard, thus allowing me to fit a 7900gt into my budget!!!!! hooray!!!!!!!

the mainboard is a pc chips one, with pretty good cust. reviews:

pc chips mobo
7900gt
1gb ddr2 533 ram
samsung 160gb hdd
fortron source 350w psu (their psu's are underrated, plus 7900 only requires 350 anyway)

Hmmm... never skimp on the motherboard... and I'm pretty sure that system will stretch the PSU to it's limits.

IMO you should save a little more cash or downgrade the vid card. I don't think you're spending enough to build a good stable system around a 7900GT.


 
Switch the case out for an Antec NSK4400 with 380 watt PSU included, since it has a PCI-E connector for the video card. I'd also downgrade the processor to a 3200+ and use the extra money to get a better motherboard, preferably something overclockable like the Biostar TForce6100 AM2 (PcChips doesn't have any overclocking options as far as I know). if you absolutely have to get the PCChips board, at least get the one with the Geforce 6100 chip. You should end up with something that performs almost as well as my system (A64 3200+ 939 @2.4 ghz, 1 gig of Ram, 7900gt), and so you should be able to play even something as demanding as Oblivion at pretty high settings.
 
How about an Asrock775 and 6300c2d for like $240..

I personally wounldn't skimp on mobo either...

An opty 144 and $100 mobo such as dfi ultra-d or asus is less than c2d..
(but then you need a quality p/s)
