OK, forgive me, but I haven't had to do any kind of building for years,

So now there are different types of hard drive interfaces and I am unsure what kind of drive I need to buy for a Shuttle SB83G5 I will be getting to replace my shot Shuttle. The 40gig drive I had just went bust (today) and they don't make drives that small these days.

I don't quite get all the IDE vs EIDE and ATA and SATA and so on. I'm just stumped on all that and under the gun to find a drive.

Shuttle's website no longer has information on this model that I can locate.

At Newegg it still shows a page and has the following...

Storage...
IDE ATA: 1 x ATA 100
Serial ATA: 2 x SATA 1.5Gb/s

The cables in the case itself say 30V VW-1 Serial ATA 26AWG LIAN FENG. So I need Serial ATA and probably 1.5GB/s, yes? I see an old IDE interface on the MB and that has never been used, so IDE is out if I am right.

But is 3.0 speed backwards compatible? There are near zero 1.5's left for sale out there.

Is this going to do the trick?

Or this?

Something like this is NOT what I need, right?

Sorry to appear to be so dense, but I haven't been involved with building a system in a long long time. I can still troubleshoot, but that's about it. :\

Yes, 3.0Gb/s Serial ATA drives will work with most 1.5Gb/s SATA controllers. The few that aren't fully compatible (a few obscure SiS and VIA controller chips, which your computer doesn't even have), can be made compatible with a firmware upgrade.
