recently my father inlaw and his busienss partner purchased a new business. It had not a single PC in the place and it was up to me to procure, deploy and set up 5+ PCs, 1 server and the entire network... along with a few programs, printers and a few cables here and there.

Now I know its my father inlaw and all, but he is requiring I give him a bill. What's the going rate for such work nowadays... I will take of the inlaw percentage.

Depends on what you know. Quickly and properly, backup systems thought out, security attended to? $50 an hour minimum.

literally I just set up the network for now. backups etc are all on the drawing board... this i a big project we are doing in multi-steps at this point (in cluding future web integration with peach tree, ordering, product lines etc)... for now its just a simply LAN config.

Are you providing support?

If so, you're going to want to charge him at a bare minimum $150/hour upfront, and a fee for support in the future.

No support (everything as-is) $50-75/hour is fine.

dude - all he did was buy a bunch of computers and put them on a router/switch.
you want him to charge 75 for that - sheesh!

If you don't charge a lot now and let people know it's going to cost them big $$$ if they call you every single time there is the simplest problem with the computer, you will be taken advantage of.

And $100/hour for similar work hasn't kept plenty of small businesses around here from giving me calls.

well I did a bit more than that (Exchange, VPN, domain name network logins, access levels cableing etc etc )

as far as support, they are aware that I will "help" them on a case by case bais, but generally speaking I am making sure they know Dell's support number, Peachtree's support etc etc. I can TS into the server and config from home or work. As I said it is a MUCH larger project in scope but this is just the first stage.. getting the PCs online and the 2003 server running

You can bill per hour or use a flat fee like 125 per networked PC and 250 per server which includes setup, software install and cable pull.

I charge $20/hour for anything. What you did, I would charge, say, $1000

Actually, it depends on how long it took....
