Not sure what I did wrong... but RT311 wont let me login

I was changing some settings, and while it was saving to rom it crashed on me. After I rebooted the router it wouldn't let me login to the settings menu. I tired telnet, and via IE (browser) interface. I would try using the serial port, but I can't find the cable. :| The site says to use the serial port if telnet or web interface doesn't work. I even tried via ftp, maybe clearing the rom, or replacing it. But that didn't work either! So I guess I?m sh!t out of luck!

I?m using my brothers Linksys BEFSR41, which I like better then my RT311. If anyone has had this happen to them before, please let me know what you did to get back into the RT311 settings? I don?t know if I want to go through all the trouble of getting this thing working again.

Thanks.

You might need to re-flash your router and set it back to default values. Read the manual or go to the netgear website for details on how to do this.

Tried to re flash. But it won't let me access the router via ftp. I did read the manual, and Netgears site, it states to use the serial cable (which I can't find).

If any 9pin serial cable works (?), I may just to down to local comp shop and pick one up.

Any serial cable will work. Setup Hyper Terminal and follow the documentation guide for the necessary settings. The other way is to try and telnet to it.

Great, I will try and pick up a cable this weekend.

Telnet also doesn't do the trick. The cable at this point is my only hope. 🙁

Any serial cable will work.

In my experience, not just any serial cable will work. I went through 3 before I found out that I needed the one thats used for a serial mouse. Look for a serial "mouse extension cable". I have a RT314 and the same thing happened to me. In my case I changed the server IP from 192.168.0.1 to my ISP's IP.

When you connect using HyperTerminal make sure you using the right baud rate. I believe 9600 works (could be wrong). It wouldn't connect with other speeds.
