Sounds bad. Try a different PCI-e slot for the video card and/or re-seat the video card. Resetting the CMOS might be worth trying too, but I'm really reaching here. Check all cables, make sure something hasn't just become disconnected.

Unfortunately power does flow through the front and back usb ports. His mistake was trying to straighten the pins while the system was on. Also they cannot be repaired once the plastic guide inside has broken off exposing those pins.

He needs to unplug the front usb ports from the motherboard and hope that it's just shorting out the board. If it works then he needs to just leave the front ports unplugged.

Tell your son that the busted front USB port is a lost cause, disconnect it (with the power turned off and UNPLUGGED) from the mobo, and then install one of these kits, with a USB3.0 card with front header, and a front panel with dual USB 3.0 ports.

Oh, and the display outputs on most video cards, are tied in the same +5V line as the USB ports are, so if he shorted or damaged those, then possibly your video outputs on your video card got damaged too. Or are simply shorting out due to the port shorting, and will fix themselves once you unplug the shorted front USB ports from the mobo.
