hey all,

Hopefully someone can help me with this; Im not sure at all how to go about this

Question:
There are five systems, each with its own dedicated printer, and one network printer. how can you facilitate printing to each of the six printers from ANY other printer? Using peer to peer techniques as facilitated by windows is not permitted.

I understand how share the network printer amongst computers, but how would you share local printers without file and printer sharing in windows, or novell netware for that case?

any help would be appreciated, thanks

You can't share printers in a Windows environment without using Windows File and Printer Sharing. You could use a stand-alone print server that would share the printers, or a Jet Direct type device in each of the printers to put them on the network separate from the PCs, but to share local (attached to PCs) printers, you have to use file and printer sharing.

Yes, it's the same for NetWare, and Unix, and any other network environment. The only way to share a printer that is physically attached to a computer is to share it from within the operating system on that computer.

the only other way I could think of is to setup a printer server and hookup all the local printers to that, but that defeats the entire purpose.

I appreciate the help fardringle, thanks
