Not so simple problem

So I just rebuilt the core of my system..

New stuff:
ASUS A8V-E SE (VIA K8T890)
Athlon XP4000+ (OEM)
XFX Geforce 7900GS

Old Stuff:
500w PSU
350gb hdd (1x250, 1x100)
Misc. optical drives (1 DVD-ROM, 1 CD Burner)
1gb DDR400 (2x512)

Everything was working great before I installed the new stuff.

Now that everything is installed, I'm having some issues.

*edit*
I've got almost everything fixed, except two problems still.

1. (not a big deal)My CD burner isn't responding. No power, no open, doesn't show up, nothing. I've tried a different molex to power it, no dice. It's on the same ribbon cable as another working optical drive, so that isn't the answer.

2. Bigger problem System won't boot unless I unplug my mouse and keyboard (both USB) and then plug them back in after windows has booted. Now I've thought of everything I know and haven't been able to solve this. Could it be an IRQ problem somehow? I don't know much about that. A BIOS issue?

Any insight would be appreciated,

Thanks.

First guess I'd make would be a weak power supply. I've learned just because one says 500w, isn't the same as another brands 500w (efficiency among other things). Sounds like its not powerful enough to handle your new setup. Also remember, newer video cards can be pretty big power hogs.

If that were the case, wouldn't it crash when I tried something more demanding on my power supply (i.e. Heavily graphical games) I've been running Battlefield 2142 at a pretty high resolution and it performs perfectly.

what are your jumpers set to?
mouse and keyboard. I would check what the bios is set too.

I agree with the power supply concern. Just starting up could be enough power draw to cause problems if the PS can't handle the +12 load. I would check the jumpers on the optical drives. I have always had the best luck using master/slave settings rather than CS. Mixing CS and Master could cause your problem. The kybd/mouse problem is almost certainly a BIOS setting. Some MBs have specific settings for allowing (or not) USB keyboards/mice. Check the settings carefully.

Good luck!🙂
