Fat guy on the right.

My mom and brother-in-law came over to take him to the vet. I got him back in 1994, when I was still in community college. He died in my brother-in-laws arm about 2 minutes before he was gonna be put down.

I couldn't bear to go.

He started breathing very fast and very heavy the last 2 days, and I couldn't bear to see it anymore. I really wanted him to make it one last Christmas.

I am happy he went on his own, and in someones familiar arms, it makes me feel that he lived his whole life, and didn't have an artificial limit.

His death hit me harder than any other, because I am old enough to realize how permanent it is. I hope he is humping all those fly bitches in doggie heaven.

God now I feel bad about screaming at my dog for peeing on the floor before I went to work today...

Always tough to lose a pet, really puts a damper on the holidays...

Aw, that's so sad! Pets become children eventually!

Not a happy eve for you!

That's sad, but I guess on the bright side is, he didn't have to be killed? I know that sounds harsh but at least he lived his life fully and died of natural causes.
I've never had a dog but I know that is hard

I've had my red healer since i was 8. She's almost 12 now and she just doesn't have that same look in her eyes anymore :(

I am absolutely happy he went on his own. He was suffering this entire past year, and as much as I loved the guy, there were times when i vented at him (never hit him though, it's been > 10 years since I struck my dogs in anger.)

It was more heartbreaking to see him become a shadow of what he was. It's funny, I am not a religious guy, but I know that animal made it to heaven.

Thanks all. Posting here really helps a bit. I have no one else to really share sorrow. :)

?He is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog. You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.?

All dogs go to heaven.

sorry about your loss man:(
I'm sitting in a coffee shop with my buddy at my feet, I can't imagine losing him like that.

Though I'm not even remotely religious, I always liked this. Supposed to be an old American Indian saying:

God made the heavens and stars.
He make the Earth, the trees and the flowers.
He made the bird, the deer and the bear.
But he didn't make the dog.....
He already had one.

Sorry for your loss. I know I still miss my english setter and it's been over five years.

We had to put our dog down after he went blind and couldn't fend for himself. He didn't even have the energy to shake off the flies. I guess they could smell his demise coming.

It was a good 10+ years though.

We've all been there. :brokenheart:

Nice looking dog. Kind of looks like my dog. Is he part chow by any chance?

Sorry for your loss.
