Not receiving texts. Going from underground to outside hours later

Hi I sometimes work at a facility that is underground. You can't get reception there until you go upstairs. My wife texts me at 9am - 10am about 3 texts yesterday, I go upstairs for lunch around 1:30pm and have received none of the texts still after all this time. I thought once you get reception you phone will download the texts as there is to be some handshake to acknowledge it?

Try leaving your phone upstairs when you go below. Your system may not know that you can't receive. Alternatively, turn your phone OFF before you descend to the bowels. Then the system knows to drop text in your mailbox.

My iPhone 6 Plus "just works" perfectly when I go to subway for a hour or so then I go out of train and as soon as I walk stairs outside I get text messages right away.
Anyway Like CorkyG said, try turn off your phone when you go underground and turn on when you go upstair, it should work.

I doubt it's a device thing if you normally get texts. Could be how your carrier handles extended unavailability and you're outside the threshold. Might as well ask your carrier.

Does your wife's phone show the texts as successfully sent?

Yes it shows it on her end as going through, or at least that's the info I've been told.

We're with Verizon and this occasionally happens to us although there is no 'underground' involved. We live out in a country setting and never venture into the city. She's the text fiend. I sometimes don't receive them until many hours later and have occasionally not received a text at all. I just shrugged it off as a glitch.

Completely different circumstances than the OP is experiencing, I just wanted to relate that similar things happen to us on Verizon.

put your phone into airplane mode; when you go back to the surface, take airplane mode off, your phone should immediately get the signal back.

This is not a good solution and doesn't make sense.

Use something other than SMS, or use Google Voice (in the US), or us Google Hangouts on wifi.

sounds carrier related. call them and have you re-register your phone on the network. I did that and it solved a problem I was having. My calls dropped EVERY SINGLE TIME I drove by Giants stadium in NJ. Without fail. Seemed like a tower handoff issue which felt carrier-related. Getting my phone re-registered on the network solved that problem for like 8 weeks at a time. Can't hurt to try that.

Turn on Airplane mode briefly, and then turn it off and go back to regular cellular service. That usually pings the network for updates and may fix any temporary modem issue on your phone.

I've had MMS not download, especially with WiFi on, but if I cycle Airplane Mode, it fixes things.

I would put it in airplane mode manually before it loses signal, then take it back off when I have good signal again.
