Some say the best thing to do when swapping motherboards, cpu etc is a clean reinstall of XP. Yet there are a number of folks out there (and here on AT) who have sytems and methods for not having to clean reinstall XP and lose all of your files, programs and info. Tomorrow I will start an upgrade that entails a new intel mobo (945PSNL), new ddr2 memory an PCIE vid card, and Pentium D 830. I would love to be able to do that and still keep all the stuff I have on my machine. Right now I'm leaning toward a methodology I got from PCSTATS.com.

Here is my major concern. Right now I'm running two 80 gig sata hd's in raid 0. I do not intend to run a raid system in my upgraded rig - in fact the new mobo does not support raid. I have visions of terrible things happening if I follow the "repair" procedure PCSTATS recommends. What do the drives do with the alternate striping of the data if there are no raid drivers?

If you want to switch from RAID0 back to non-RAID, you will almost certainly need to reformat the drives. Few (if any) RAID controllers can migrate backwards from striped to non-striped RAID levels nondestructively, and the new disk controller will have no clue how to deal with your RAID0.

Changing motherboards without reinstalling is certainly doable; please search for several recent threads on the topic, and there is an AT FAQ/Guide on this topic under the "Guides" link at the top of the page. But if you simultaneously want to go from RAID0 to no RAID, and the RAID0 is your boot volume, you may have no choice but to reinstall (unless you can image the RAID0 onto a single large hard drive).

Thanks Matthias99, I suspected as much because of the way raid operates in 0. I'll just go ahead and start anew. Thanks again.
