Ok I have a gut checker here.
I built a computer for a guy @ work. Everything worked fine for me. He takes it home and it will not boot up. You turn it on and no beeps nothing. I open it up and all the lights on the MB work the Hard drive has a light on the board of it and it is on but the drives are not spinning up. It is an old socket A board and I put in a 400w PSU thinking that might be the problem. nothing. Now after a little fiddling with I can get the power to bump when I unplug the ATX connector to the MB but it does not spin anything for very long before it shuts off.

What can be the problem here?

Thanks for any help or advice.

What do you mean by this?

It seems something got wack out of place when he transported home. YOu might want to remount the cpu, ram, video card etc. See if the motherboard might be touching the case, it might be shorting out.

Also, never build computers for co-workers, friend of friend, etc. Send them to Dell.

Yeah I reseated everything. I removed the MB from the case even.
The only reason I built it for him was because he wanted something a little less prop. something he could expand upon in the future.
I didnt know if possibly the MB has a problem and would cause this to happen.

Dells are highly upgradeable via parts, video card, sound card, ram, etc. Their 4000 series and up are pretty nice. Their powersupplies are top notch, too bad they don't do A64.

Okay, everything is pointing towards the mobo at this point. To elimnate other parts, I would suggest to test video card, ram, etc on another machine.

Did you also short the cmos (refer to mb manual to locate exact jumper location) in order to reset all bios settings? Give that a shot.

Ok as far as dell goes I work on about 300+ of them here @ work. I know the price range he was looking @ he can not upgrade much. The PSU is prop. the Motherboard is Prop. Or you have to rewire a shelf bought one. Not to mention how many CD drives and hard drives can you fit in a well demsion 3000? (His price range) That would be 3 total with no modding.
Sorry I wil try all of than next and see. But have you seen a MB do this before? It seems kind of strange for it to do that.

Dell SC420/400 server deals are under 350 out the door usually. You can add a few drives. But why would it matter to him if its properity, unless he is gamer. Then thats makes sense. How many hard drives do you expect him to add, a DVD burner does it all these days.

When I did do "building" for peeps, I examine their needs, etc. But once you build for them, you're their tech support for life

Well, did you actually bring it to his house or did he transport it home himself? Anything could of happen btw when you gave it to him to his house. A bump in the road, he plug it into a non grounded plug, he got a spike, etc.

You stated fiddling around, the connectors from the molex might not be properly gripping into board. Try wiggling around and unplugging. You might get lucky and get it to power up.

Yeah I wiggled it from the mb and the drives. I have an atx PSU tester and the PSU tested ok, and the drives spun with it ( I forgot to undo them)
I didnt set it up for him and who knows how he put it in his car. Those are Q's I can not answer. I am going to try a little more with the power connectors and if all else look for an ok socket A mb I think the egg has some cheap sh|t for like $30. And that is what he will get.
Thanks.
