OP - are you using the latest ATI drivers? Also, when you compared FPS, are you using the same qualities levels? If no, does the X1800XT provide a better pic at least?

The game I play is BF2. I just bought a 7800GTX 512 but have read that the X1800XT provides the same FPS but with a higher IQ experience. I believe part of the reason is b/c BF2 is capped at a 90FPS for some reason. Thus, I wonder if I should keep the 512 or sell it on ebay and get a x1800xt.

If thats what your going to be playing then sell sell sell now. The shortages on that card will get you some cash in your pocket.

Well it boils down to this, keep the X1800XT with my Athlon64-3500+, or return the ATI, and go back to my eVga 7800GTX and get a AthlonFX-55.

For games like WoW and BattleField2 which is the better system ? Sorry about three posts in a row.

Keep the GTX and get the FX. A lot of games are CPU limited so you will get better performance with a better CPU. In fact games like WoW and BF2 benefit from a better CPU.

He is hardly going to be CPU limited at the resolutions he posted...

I wonder if he shouldn't get an X2 instead of the FX55. I bought mine largely because it was new tech, and I'd had a few too many, but in light of the dual core optomized nVidia drivers, and the Quake 4 patch, it's looking like it may pay off over the next year.

It would be sweet if devs started using this more.

Dont get the FX. Why waste so much money on a processor? Get a 2nd 7800GTX instead. You'll notice much greater performance boost if you got money to burn.

Going with FX55 from 3500+ will gain you almost nothing in performance in BF2.

WOW will have a noticeable increase. But still go with a faster graphics interface.

This is true as well- a second GTX will yield far more than any other upgrade.

You my friend have more money than sense.... ;)

So lets make a deal, I will give you some of my sense and you give me enough of your money to buy me one of those cards :p

Me thinking I would be lucky to upgrade to a 7800 GT and here he is switching out GTX for a 1800XT sheesh heh.

I dont know who came up with the idea that modern games are cpu limited, but it's certainly not the case at 1900x1200 resolutions, not by far even with a 512gtx. And dont waste money on a fx55, I'm sure you could easily OC the 3500 to fx55 levels - even my 3000 can be OC'd that far. In general you'll see a lot more benefit from a faster video card than from a faster cpu as long as you already have an A64 processor.

I would agree his best bet would be either a X2 a second GTX or both. Nivida's new drivers and Quake4's new patch both support "dual core" and will give a performance boost.

I think, SirDingo, you are being way too critical on the subject. 82fps vs 78fps isn't any difference. It's a little over 5% difference. Nothing under 10% matters.

Give us some WOW fps comparison.

You could have checked out benches before you went and bought it. I think the better image quality on the ATI cards make it a better deal.

But since you are bent on upgrading anything, I wouldn't wast money on a FX-55. I would definitely get a second GTX and a A64 X2 3800+.

Can you actually tell the diffference between 78 fps and 82 fps?

Why not wait a few months for the R580/G71 so you can get a tangible increase, so you can play WoW at 3600x1900 or something. It's such a stunningly beautiful game, it certainly deserves that kind of resolution.
