Not impressed with X1800XT over my 7800GTX

I bought my eVga 7800GTX back in June, and have loved it the whole time. Well I read the reviews on the ATI X1800XT being a much faster card in certain games like BattleField2 at 1920x1200+res, and my last three cards were ATI, so I was tempted to try them again, and see if the 512mb and new architecture would be worth changing from my 7800GTX.

I planned on selling my 7800GTX to my Brother at a nice discount for Christmas.

Well hold off Brother on that sale, I am NOT impressed so far. I tried the CS:S video stress test on 2560x1600res with 2xAA/8XAF, the 7800GTX scored 82fps, then I installed the X1800XT at same settings got 78fps.

Also play alot of WoW, and the 7800GTX has been nice at 1920x1200, tried the X1800XT on WoW, and it feels choppy, not nearly as smooth as the 7800GTX.

So I do not mean to bash ATI, they have been good to me, but nVidia has done a really good job with the 7800series, just wish I could buy the 512 version, and sell the older GTX to my Brother.

I am no fanboy, I buy both nVidia + ATI, for the past few years, just what ever is the best bang for the buck. I could care less which company produces the video card, I mean like every year or so the card's are almost brand new architecture, so if you had problems once with one brand the next time around it is all new

Also was playing HalfLife2 last night 2560x1600 2xAA/8xAF, and it looked stunning on the X1800XT, but then like 40min inot the game it just freaked out, and my 30" Display got all crazy lines on it, I could not crt/alt/dlt or nothing, had to restart

Well it boils down to this, keep the X1800XT with my Athlon64-3500+, or return the ATI, and go back to my eVga 7800GTX and get a AthlonFX-55.

For games like WoW and BattleField2 which is the better system ? Sorry about three posts in a row.

Why do you keep replying to your own post over and over? I don't care personally. Both cards are great and if you bought it for battlefield 2... why do you compare the cards in every game other than battlefield 2, that is stupid?????

Have you tested with BF2 to see the difference? Anyway, keep the card you like best and sell the other on ebay or to your brother.... they are both great cards & your lucky to have owned both! Enjoy.

dude , i got a 7800GTX and wasn't impressed and when i got a x1800xL i wasn't impressed with it either ... when i got xbox 360 + bought Geometry war for $5 i was very impress. WHy Because all new game are ultra crap and a really old redone classic game can beat the crap out everything i have played so far this year which makes me wonder where the hell is gaming industry going. Now days its all about making game look better. Developer now less focus on Physic , AI and game play because every noob wants to see a better looking game. If you just wanted to play WOW and BF2 you didn't need to buy a 7800GTX because a card like 6800gt/x800xl/6600gt would do you fine unless you had a 20 inc + monitor with here res than 1600x1200.

Keep the GTX and get the FX. A lot of games are CPU limited so you will get better performance with a better CPU. In fact games like WoW and BF2 benefit from a better CPU.

Dont get the FX. Why waste so much money on a processor? Get a 2nd 7800GTX instead. You'll notice much greater performance boost if you got money to burn.

Going with FX55 from 3500+ will gain you almost nothing in performance in BF2.
LINK

WOW will have a noticeable increase. But still go with a faster graphics interface.

recently replaced the x800xl with the 78000 gt and i have not looked back since. the 7800 gt is way better in almost all aspects. eg drivers, image qualities, frame rate etc. which make me a very happy 7800 gt owner:)

That would be a step back for the OP as he currently has a GTX and an X1800XT. Anyway, either one of those two cards is awesome and unless your a big AOE3 fan the XT is most likely the faster card. Well I guess you get 4 more frame in WOW (OP expierience). I'm not sure is anyone can see the difference between 78 and 82 fps.

Huh? The OP has a 30" monitor and plays at resolutions way beyond 1600x1200.

OP - are you using the latest ATI drivers? Also, when you compared FPS, are you using the same qualities levels? If no, does the X1800XT provide a better pic at least?

The game I play is BF2. I just bought a 7800GTX 512 but have read that the X1800XT provides the same FPS but with a higher IQ experience. I believe part of the reason is b/c BF2 is capped at a 90FPS for some reason. Thus, I wonder if I should keep the 512 or sell it on ebay and get a x1800xt.

I had no such experiences when moving over to an X1800XT. IMO, both the GTX and the XT are great cards. Then again, I really can't comment on gaming on an Apple 30" Cinema Display.

How about getting another GTX and going SLI? I for one will never go back to a single card for my main gaming rig.

Hey since you don't like your X1800XT, will you trade me it? I'll give you my 7800 GTX + cash for it. That way you can go SLI and I get to have the XT.

I am an ATI fan and I can still tell tha ATI's new lineup isnt worth it over nvidia right now. You shouldnt of bought it trade you card to 550joker than have SLi.

Play with Adaptive AA turned up and HQ AF. The performance is good and IQ is great. I run BF2 at 1920x1200 6xAAA, 16x HQAF (not sure if BF2 even use AF but I enable it via CCC) and I have no slowdows/lag and the it looks really good. The performance hit between 4xAAA and 6xAAA was 1fps on the CS:S stress test so that's my measure.

I disagree. I think that ATI's lack of availability early on has tainted the reputation of R520. The X1800XT card itself is great and it compares nicely with the GTX 256 and GTX 512, landing between the two in most benchmarks 1600x1200 and up with 4xAA/16xAF in performance and is comparable in price as well.

Damn it nitro, you should be saying the X1800XT sucks and is worse than a 6600 GT so this guy will trade me!
