USB Story

Friends BIOS notes USB settings "High or Full" (asus)

Just a head ups .. if this needs to be locked because I've broken some rule of posting, please do. Just posting because I've seen others post these types of notices.

Yeah, that's funny - I just bought a Canon i950 printer and after reading the article decided to check the specs on the box. It reads:

USB 2.0 Full Speed (USB 1.1 equivalent)

The Belkin USB cable I bought for it is a USB2 cable, but it specifically says "Hi-Speed 480Mbps Transmission - 40 Times Faster than USB 1.1"

Another crazy thing is that the passive USB components, meaning the interconnects and plugs, are the same for both USB 1.1 & USB 2. There is no need to "upgrade" your old USB cables, and those "new, improved" computer cases with USB 2 front-panel plugs are likely old & unimproved.

If I am in a car and the car is capable of 150 MPH, wouldn't "full speed" be the equivalent of 150 MPH?

If I am driving at 100 MPH, would I not be driving at "high speed"?

I think this is a hot deal simply for the newsworthiness of it!
It makes you think and therefore know the truth about some of your next purchases.
Fraudulent? You bet your ass.:D:D:D

is there any USB device out there that utilizes 480mbps? or did they just make that number up, but made sure it was higher than firewire...

OMG I have some experience with this already. I went to buy a USB 2.0 CF/MM/SD/SM/etc. card reader (6-in-1) from Microcenter. On their site they listed a Lexar 6-in-1 USB 2.0 model, and when I went there there was certainly a 6-in-1 Lexar model, but I couldn't be sure it was USB 2.0. It wasn't labeled as such anywhere, and it just said "Hi-Speed USB." Now, USB 1.1 is "high speed" compared to serial, and USB 2.0 is "high speed" compared to USB 1.1. How could I be sure which was which? I couldn't, so I bought a SanDisk model specifically labeled USB 2.0.
