OK. This may be a bit OT, but Comcast is increasing their cable modem internet fees yet again. The price increase applies to customers who DO NOT subscribe to any level of cable TV service. My current price is $44.95 and will be increasing to $54.95. Plus there is an additional $5 modem rental fee (I own my own).
As a "valued customer" (yeah, right) Comcast is making comcast cable internet subscribers an offer to subscribe to "Basic" cable service (the local channels; 1-13-ish) for $14.10 and at the same time the cable internet price will be reduced to $39.95. So, with "Basic" cable your bill will be $54.05.
This is a HOT deal, save $0.90 by taking Comcast's "Basic" cable.
Seriously though, the real HOT Deal is hidden in the "Dish Buy Back" program -- if you are lucky enough to find one on clearance somewhere (Office Depot had some a while ago), a yard sale, or just get one from eBay. With this program they give you a $25 credit for the next 16 months = $400 of savings. The discount only applies if you subscribe to digital cable (which is another $14.95) in addition to "basic" cable. That puts us at $69.00 per month - $25 = $44 per month. Now that is a hot deal.
If you would want to use this as your ONLY cable servie, most people would probably want "standard" cable too (it is the ESPN, Cartoon Network, Sci-Fi type channels) which is an additional $25.
P.S. I'm probably going to keep my DirectTV and find a cheap one somewhere so I can take advantage of the "Dish Buy Back" program.
Edit: I'm in eastern PA, just north of Philly (19406). Usually, Comcast "cycles" through the price increase until all branches have increased. So, the price increase may be farther back for some of us.
