OK. This may be a bit OT, but Comcast is increasing their cable modem internet fees yet again. The price increase applies to customers who DO NOT subscribe to any level of cable TV service. My current price is $44.95 and will be increasing to $54.95. Plus there is an additional $5 modem rental fee (I own my own).

As a "valued customer" (yeah, right) Comcast is making comcast cable internet subscribers an offer to subscribe to "Basic" cable service (the local channels; 1-13-ish) for $14.10 and at the same time the cable internet price will be reduced to $39.95. So, with "Basic" cable your bill will be $54.05.

This is a HOT deal, save $0.90 by taking Comcast's "Basic" cable.

Seriously though, the real HOT Deal is hidden in the "Dish Buy Back" program -- if you are lucky enough to find one on clearance somewhere (Office Depot had some a while ago), a yard sale, or just get one from eBay. With this program they give you a $25 credit for the next 16 months = $400 of savings. The discount only applies if you subscribe to digital cable (which is another $14.95) in addition to "basic" cable. That puts us at $69.00 per month - $25 = $44 per month. Now that is a hot deal.

If you would want to use this as your ONLY cable servie, most people would probably want "standard" cable too (it is the ESPN, Cartoon Network, Sci-Fi type channels) which is an additional $25.

P.S. I'm probably going to keep my DirectTV and find a cheap one somewhere so I can take advantage of the "Dish Buy Back" program.

Edit: I'm in eastern PA, just north of Philly (19406). Usually, Comcast "cycles" through the price increase until all branches have increased. So, the price increase may be farther back for some of us.

I wish these companies would stop this madness with the price hikes.....good lord, the prices of technology are coming down....not going up!!!
I may just kick Comcast to the side and join up with my local telco since they got DSL here last week.

This is too bad to get this price increase. I am already getting basic channels, even without subscribing for TV. Now it doesn't make difference if I take the TV or not, because I am already getting it. Only change is the price increase.

I have "basic" cable TV for around $13.00 and AT&T broadband cable. Funny thing is, they don't have the ability to block the standard cable channels so I still get ~80 channels. I do pay $46/mo for internet service though - It would be nice if I could get my interbet service reduced to $39...

I personally hate Charter Communications with a passion big enough to engulf the easter seabord! They always raise rates eery 3 months, screw digital cable, and they always mess up the bill. They are idiotic at best and i hope their CEOs follow adelphia's.

I pay $65.00 per month with Wide Open West this includes 1500/300 cable internet, HBO and basic analog cable. Their service area is limited in the midwest, but the service is very good. Meaning I get around 1400/295 all the time. Unlike when I had concast and was paying for 1500/125 and only getting 700/125.

I get about 8 mailings per week, every week, from Comcast advertising their crap. They're probably raising prices to pay for all that unneccessary advertising!

It's criminal the way cable companies have divided the country between themselves and now charge outrageous prices. In most areas there is no choice of cable company - take it or leave it. The only option is satellite for TV and DSL for internet access.

What surprises me is that monopoly is such a big issue in other fields, browsers, Windows & long distance etc. How come the cable companies get away without raising an eyebrow?

What we need is competition to bring prices down to reasonable levels and stop this price gouging.

Actually, they do. They just didn't put the filter on your line, apparently...
