Not getting the desired speed.

Hello, I recently bought a 300Mbp/s Wireless N PCI Adapter. Model TL-WN951N.

I installed the drivers and everything but I'm only getting 54 mbp/s, am I doing something wrong?

Netgear Advanced Cable Modem Gateway CGD24G

You can use a repeater that is plugged into your wired LAN port for better speed, but even then you won't exceed 100mbps due to the 10/100 LAN ports.

I would recommend buying a DOCSIS 3.0 modem and wireless N router (at least 300mbps, to match your adapter) separately, rather that an all-in-one unit, but that depends on what you want to spend.

If you are leasing the router from your ISP, see if they'll replace it with something newer, or at least the modem.

Yup, you need a router capable of sending at that speed. You can probably configure your existing gateway to act as a modem only and disable the wifi on it, then plug your router of choice into it. That might be the most cost effective solution, unless your ISP can send you a gateway or modem/router combo that supports those speeds. Working for an ISP myself, I would personally always choose to use my own router instead of the ISP's gateway.
