Not getting power to Case

The little light on the mobo turns on, but when I hit the power button on the case I don't get any response....no lights, no fans, no sounds/beeping, nothing.

I checked the power connectors running from the buttons to make sure I plugged them in correctly. Tried plugging them in straight into the mobo and with the Q-connector. I also did a visual check of the buttons from inside the case to see if any wires were loose or the buttons weren't depressing properly, but I can't see any problems there either.

I have an ASUS PQ-5 board and the case is an NZXT Tempest Mid-ATX

Open to any suggestions, thanks!

You first need to check your power and reset button leads are connected properl as well as the other front panel connectors. Then make sure the memory modules, vid. card and CPU are seated properly. If all those are done correctly, the thing will usually power up. An on initial power up, the speed sensor on the CPU fan needs to work and be connected to the fan header marked CPU on the mobo. If that wasn't the case on first boot, you may have to clear the CMOS to disable the CPU protection and try again.
. Once you get a boot you can go into the BIOS setup and disable the CPU protection if necessary, but after that you are responsible for protecting the CPU yourself.

If it still doesn't work after you've reseated everything and double-checked all the power connections, you're probably going to have to test it outside the case to rule out a short.

Lay the motherboard on a non-conductive surface outside the case, plug in the essentials, and try to fire it up again. If it works outside the case then most likely something is shorting out the motherboard inside the case. It could be as simple as a standoff in the wrong place or a stray screw laying on the motherboard tray.

Thanks, but would the light on the motherboard still be coming on if there was a short? Because I get the light to come on, but that's the only sign of power I'm getting....I don't hear any other sound, not even from the PSU.

I believe it's still possible for the light to come on even with a short, but I'm not 100% certain.

Anyway, if the thing isn't turning on, what do you have to lose by trying it outside the case?
