Its been awhile since i have posted on these forums but im back with what im hoping will be a pretty simple problem :)

ok to understand the problem you will probably need to understand why i need it, basicly i play an old space sim game on my computer that has single player and multiplayer, i have never liked the singleplayer but i love the multiplayer, now do to the fact that i share dialup with the rest of my family i cant always get online so i figured i would start my own server.

the multiplayer as near as i can figure when in lan mode scans for an address running the server or something of the like and if i am not broadcasting an IP address it cant find my server.

The problem is my onboard "VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter" doesint seem to generate an IP unless its connected to a network and i dont have a network setup here (nor do i want one) i tried using an nic card from an old machine i dont use any more (cant remember the brand or name of the card) but it had the same issue..

any ideas/suggestions are much appreciated.

These instructions are for Windows XP, but should be very similar (slightly different names for the icons and windows) for Windows 2000:

1: Right-click on the My Network Places icon on the Windows Desktop.
2: Left-click on Properties.
3: Right-click on Local Area Connection in the Network Connections window.
4: Left-click on Properties.
5: Left-click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
6: Left-click on the Properties button.
7: Left-click on the Alternate Configuration tab (skip this step if you're using Windows 2000).
8: Left-click on the selection labeled "User Configured" (Use "Use the following IP address" if you're running Windows 2000).
9: In the IP address field, type 10.0.0.1 (or something similar).
10: In the Default gateway field type 10.0.0.1 (same number as step 8).
11: In the Preferred DNS Server and Alternate DNS server fields type 4.3.3.1 and 4.3.3.2.
12: Left-click the OK button.
13: Left-click the OK button.
14: Restart the computer if prompted to do so.

NOTE: In Windows XP, using the Alternate Configuration tab for this information will tell Windows to only use these settings if it cannot locate a DHCP server (i.e. when you are not connected to your dial-up). If you have Windows 2000 these settings will work but you will need to change it back to "Automatically obtain an IP address" whenever you want to use the dial-up.

You will always get Media Disconnected from the IPCONFIG command because the media IS disconnected (no cable plugged in to the network adapter). However, your game that needs an IP address should still be able to recognize that the computer has an IP address.

If the game is still giving you problems, then disabling the media sensing (using that article) might be appropriate. Otherwise you'll need to use a hub or router and plug a network cable between the computer and the hub/router. Even if there isn't anything else connected to the network, that will give your computer a network 'signal' and will get it to stop complaining about the media being disconnected.

sorry i didint respond sooner, the problem was that the game wouldint read the ip for unknown reasons and so most of that wasint needed i had to force the game to ping that specific IP and then it worked fine.
