Be warned: What happened to poor Igor Golushkin in the video above is not for the squeamish. These details are unconfirmed, but according to this report by Red Hot Russia, Golushkin was trying to bench press 185 kg (approximately 408 pounds) when the bar fell on his chest, tearing his diaphragm and breaking his ribs. The spotters, for some reason, didn't spot him at all. Golushkin reportedly died at a nearby trauma center a short time later. He was 34.

This is one of the many reasons why I don't do weights. It's all body for me.

For that weight, and his body size & type, those have to be some of the worst spotters on the planet (claiming to be spotters, that is).

So much fail on their part. From the very beginning, they weren't positioned correctly. They all looked clueless as to where to be & what to do. Hell, they didn't even sense danger. Terrible.

Epic fail & this guy lost his life because of their inexperience. They should find something else to do with their time, before they cost someone else their life. I wouldn't want those idiots anywhere near me in the gym.

Anyone who has either been in bodybuilding or has lifted heavy (I used to bench & squat 315, leg press 675) knows what I'm talking about.

For the record, regarding this situation, I completely disagree with GodFather13's comments. His opinion / comments apply in many other scenarios, but not this one.

The spotters did a terrible job. The one guy in the red shirt seemed like he wasn't even paying attention.

Are they fucking stupid or what? I could semi understand if the guy was going for reps and it's a weight he has done plenty of times with no issue. I could see the spotters letting their guard down in that situation.
Here though they don't even have their hands under the bar and the guy is sitting their and it's obvious he's having trouble with the weight. They just stand there like dumbasses.

Im not sure if they would have been able to stop that (though they sure weren't paying attention). He was still lifting it and the bar just slipped somehow.

Based upon the posted comments ... I'll pass. I have enough excitement in my life.

The bar fell on his chest, making his stomach bulge up.
The sits up and they hand him some water.
He seemed fine.
I wonder what it did internally that killed him?
Perforated lung? Internal bleeding?

Experienced spotters wouldn't have let that happen. Sure, it may have "touched" his chest before they pulled it up, but lightly & most likely wouldn't have caused any damage at all.

These morons didn't even know they were in a gym. That's how bad their spot was.

These guys need to stick to tennis or something because the weight room isn't their thing.

With a guy his size & weight, you should have 3 spotters, one on each end with both hands cupped under the edge, guiding the bar. The 3rd guy is behind his head, with both hands over gripped on the bar, ready at a split seconds notice, particularly watching for any unexpected rapid movement (such as what happened). Sure, 405 is heavy, but not for 3 experienced spotters.

For that weight, the first 2 - 3 reps need to be slow anyway, so you can warm up to the weight & knock the rest of the reps out at your preferred pace. The spotters know this, so if something's out of line, they'll catch it.

This isn't rocket science for the experienced, but for the inexperienced (like these goons), they shouldn't be anywhere near that amount of weight.
