all i have overclocked are Athlons. i'm really not familiar with what you can do with a P4. from what i have seen they dont get as high a FSB but the operate on really high multipliers. i was just wondering what are the typical FSB and multiplier settings that one can get with pentiums. also, what are safe VDIMM and VCORE to use? im really not interested in my system specifically (P4 1.6a on P4PE), but what P4 northwoods can do in general just so i can tweak it myself.

THANKS

p.s. id appreciate it if you could include as much detail as possible about your system

Generally 1.7v is the limit for air cooling. As for vdimm, I prefer to stay at 2.8 or lower since going higher doesn't seem to give me more benefits (its better to just get high quality ram).

I think the 2.4B northwood is the most popular right now. Generally, you can expect 160+ FSB for the 2.4B.

NOrthwoods started with the "a" model or 400fsb.....The b0 steppin version of the 1.8' and 1.6's often hit the 2.6 to 2.7ghz range...

The 2.4b ("b" model is the 533fsb chip) and 2.53ghz c1 stepping chips have been hitting 3.0 to 3.4ghz in the default to 1.65v range....multivid cpus are the ones to seek and I believe only come OEM version...

The new "c" model is ofcourse the 800fsb model and comes in 2.4,2.6,2.8, and 3.0ghz with the first 3 not readily available but I believe can be had somewhere...Early reports these are hitting 3.6 to 3.8ghz range still aircooled and are known as d1 stepping...The limitations on these chips will likely be the mobo and memory so do your research before attempting this route.

Get a MultiVid C1 from outpost.com. Tray OEM 2.53GHZ is what your looking for.

Like human2k says. My 2.53b SL6S2 Malay from outpost.com (oem multivid) does 3.3 GHz easy with stock vcore and vdimm. I can get 3.4 stable and maybe up to 3.6 or 3.7 with some bumping of the voltage, but too high a vcore is usually the first thing to kill a P4 NW

Oh, and as far as multipliers on the P4's, they're locked and can't be adjusted via mobo settings. Not sure of all of them, but the 2.53b is x19.

If its default you can at least bump it to 1.65 or so...

:D

Go for 3.6 or so!

No thanks...this one has to last me a while. 3.3 is stable as a rock but anything over that and I have to start bumping up v settings. Again, taking a chance at killing it. Even 1.65 is too close to 1.7 for me.

To get an effective 800 mhz o'c and 442 mhz DDR speed w/ all votages at default is better than anyone could ask for. Maybe when a new processor/system upgrade is on the horizon I'll push it for all it's worth, but right now I'm the fastest kid (37 going on 16 ;)) on my block and that's good enough for me.

What do you think the temp difference would be using the retail heatsink and fan?

5 C?

Yes, probably 5-10. Maybe closer to 10c. You can find the SLK-800 and 900 here for 29.99 and 39.99. I paid $50 for my 900 the week it came out, so to me, these prices don't look too bad at all. And they both get A+ reviews all over the net.

Well considering your at around 47 full load at 3.3 i figure i can get away with 3ghz at about 50c full load...

Should be fine..

Thanks and ill report back to update you when everything arrives...

Yeah, I always like to think the cooler the better, but 50c should be fine. It's not like CPU's run at full load 24/7 anyway...
