I'm beginning to install WinXp on a brand new machine, and upon doing so in DOS, it tells me that I don;t have enough hard disk space used for temporary files.

What's odd is that I've got a brand new 250 GB drive!!!

I've made sure the entire partition is formatted, and is a primary drive. What else am I missing?

Thanks

Have you tried booting from the CD, and formatting the drive from within the WinXP setup?

Actually this whole scenario is based on an install off the CD as opposed to within Windows.

After booting to a DOS prompt from a CD (this box doesn't have a floppy drive), and loading SMARTDRV, I then load the Windows install cd, and navigate to Winnt.exe.

From there the problems start. Thoughts?

You shouldn't see a "DOS prompt" at any point during the process. Insert your Windows XP CD, and upon boot, hit F1 (or F2, or DEL, depending on your motherboard) to enter into your computer's BIOS setup. From there you should be able to change your boot order so that your computer attempts to boot from your CD drive first. If you successfully boot from a CD, you should enter Windows setup immediately.

Just make your computer boot from CD (Bios) and put the XP cd in the drive and reboot. When it asks to hit a key to boot from CD, hit a key and follow all the prompts to format and install.
What is this SMARTDRV all about?

Also, make sure your XP disc has SP1 or greater included on it if you want Windows setup to detect the full 250 GB on your harddrive. You should probably slipstream SP2 onto your CD and install from that to make the process even easier. There are good instructions on how to do this here.

agreed, boot off the cd, also if you have some screwy or newer harddrive controller you may need to hit F6 to add drivers during the cd boot so it can find the drive to install on.
