not enough memory to copy a file?!

I moved about 80 GB of data rfom my external HDD to my laptop last week with out any problem. after doing some work on them I'm copying about 22 GB back onto the external, after it's copied about 4 GB an error comes up saying not enough memory to copy these files.
I've got to 2 GB of RAM. I tried increasing the virtual memory but it still didn't work.
the funny thing is I was able to copy it all back to the external using a software called beyond compare 2. what the hell is going on?

Before touching your VM settings as a result of this problem, did you touch your VM settings at all? Generally, they should be left at default and changing them can cause all sorts of problems.
 
what antivirus/firewall are you using?

Kapersky causes that problem on my system. I was moving around my 50 GB of music and 15 GB of pictures and ran into that problem. a reboot fixes it..

I believe it's a known issue.
 
No I hadn't touched the VM settings before.

I'm using AOL/Kaspersky. reboot didn't fix it.

the external HDD was initaily FAT32 formatted. but I reformated it to NTSF before moving the files back so that shouldn't be the problem. also that wouldn't explain why it worked with beyond compare 2. I can't remember the exact amount but I don't think it was EXACTLY 4 GB.

That's exactly what I am using, and I saw the same message. That is weird that a reboot didn't fix your issue... it fixed mine.
 
This is a known issue with Kaspersky in Windows Vista.

There is a limit you can only copy something like 16000 files and then it will display a message Not enough memory to copy. I have this problem too. You can visit the Kaspersky site forums. There is a fix though it's an unofficial one, and a real fix will be patched in a future version.

Usually for me, ending the explorer.exe process and restarting it resets the limit. Restarting also should fix it.

By the way you have to uninstall Kaspersky in order to get rid of this, disabling it does nothing.
 
Almost sounds like Kaspersky scans files as it copies them, keeps a list of scan data in memory, and fills up the memory when too many files are copied at once.
 
I just exit kapersky altogether when I am browsing AT/copying large amounts of files. never have a problem that way so far..
