Not enough CPU?

Well I have this new 6600gt agp and I put it in my computer and it seems to not be running as good as most of the reviews I've read. Do you think that my 2600+ tbred isnt enough cpu for the video card? I had it overclocked (220X9.5) but I didn't see much of a difference on performance. If I overclock it do you think it would help? Your help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

SPECS: 2600+ tbred, abit NF7-S, 1gb (2X512) Geil Value Series PC3200, 300W POWMAX *I just ordered a nice PSU from newegg tonight*, and 6600gt agp

Well it could be your CPU and most likely is... that is an awful lot of card for the TBred.... additionally it could be your RAM... I think Geil Value Ram runs at either CAS 2.5 or 3.... that shouldn't be as big of an issue though

yeah the ram has been run as high as pc3700 and i have it running at 2.5. I think i might change the cpu out... never put one in or put on a heatsink and fan, is it hard?

it isn't very hard.... make sure you get some good thermal grease... it can make all the difference in the world. In the case of Thermal paste, less is more... the only real point of it is to make sure that any microscopic gaps in between the processor die and heatsink are filled... Most heatsink come with their own thermal grease and should include instructions.

Okay thanks. Yeah in a few months I think I'm going to be picking up either a socket 754 or 939 setup. Just matters how fast I can get the money. Thanks for the help.

You should be able to hit at least 2.2ghz with the 2600+. You won't be very CPU-limited at that speed. If possible, get your FSB to 200mhz.

hi i ran into about same, running amd 2600, 512 pc4000 geil golden dragan. got a gigabyte 5950 gt ultra. performace and speed in game was like bad. the 5600 xt was better..lol no joke. every time i clicked a link or tryed to play i could hear my puter fans speeds change. i got a 550 watt psu and had no more issues. play lot of cs so am happy now good luck hope this helps.

lol I have the FSB at 225 right now and could go higher but a little unstable and I don't want to raise my voltage too much to cause any extra heat because I have stock cooling and it already gets a little hot but not unbarable.

Oh and I've hit 2.5 ghz b4 :)

I dont think its your CPU at all. I had my 6800 ultra on my old 1.7 P4 and it worked fine.

If you compared your benchmarks with Anand's on an FX-53 you would see quite the difference.

Are there any specific benchmarks in which you have noticed a disparity? Chances are that if you were testing at lower resolutions, then cpu speed was definately a factor since comparing old XP architecture to say FX-55 is going to show a large difference in frames per second at something like 800x600. With your videocard you should feel comfortable increasing the resolution to 1280x1024 and continue to have smooth gameplay, while transfering most of the cpu workload onto the graphics card (I bet with higher resolutions your experience will start to better resemble the benchmarks online). Also check for other differences such as latest videocard/chipset drivers, amount of ram, etc.
