Not detecting a router 30 feet away?

I initially had an old Dell branded Lucent Technologies RG-1000, but it died and I replaced it with a Linksys A+G router. The computer 5 feet away detects it fine, but the one 30 feet away cant even see it occasionally. Is the signal strength just a lot lower or something?

First thing I would check is to see if the router has an option for wireless signal strength. If I recall, mine came set to the "medium" setting and not the "maximum." Although I don't have experience with a wireless desktop, some wireless laptops have an option to see the power management of the wireless network card. Set that to the highest setting.
