Not Connected but Actually Connected

Is there some freeware network manager I can use for XP? I am having great difficulty getting my Linksys WUSB54G to connect to anything due to the fact that Windows ALWAYS reports not connected even if I am connected.

Any ideas?

You need to understand the difference between: 1. Being connected to your local area network, and, 2. Having a connection to the internet.

This is something that many people don't understand--a lot of people just see "Connected" and think that means that you have a connection to the internet, but in many cases it does not.

What is your set up like? Modem --> Router --> Computer? If so, and you see "Connected", that means that you are connected to the router--nothing more. If that is the correct scenario and you are having trouble accessing the internet, then try to connect your computer strait to the modem. If you are then able to get online, then the problem exists with the router; if you are not able to get online when directly connected, then the problem exists with the modem/ISP.

I am able to get online while connecting via wireless to a wireless router. The problem is that XP never tells me I am connected. It is convinced that my wireless connection is connected to nothing yet I am able to surf the web just fine. I am NOT connected to anything directly so that is not why I have access. I have access because the wireless connection is actually connected even if Windows says it is not. I just want to understand what the problem is in XP and find out if there is anything I can do to fix it or another tool I can use that will actually tell me if I am connected.

Apparently I am typing this message on a computer that is not connected to the internet. 🙂 I tend to lose the connection after a short time. I'm convinced it is because my OS believe I am NOT connected.

Bump!

I'm actually having the exact same problem. I'm using a Linksys WUSB11, however I completely removed the software that may have been overriding Windows handling connection and removed ICS. It says I'm not connected via wireless, but somehow I'm typing this message.

In most cases issues like this has to do with the Wireless card's drivers.

Windows cannot guess what each manufacturer is concocting with its wireless devices, the OS gets the info from the drivers. Bad Drivers or quirky installation would cause these problems.

In most cases the best solution is to disable Windows Wireless Zero Configuration and use the Brand's Utility.

If it does not work with the original utility then talk to the manufacturer.

Greatly appreciated. I had a feeling that this might have been the case because I noticed different driver files/installation all together between this new installation and those on an older computer.
