Not booting after HD removal

I have Vista Ultimate 64, I removed a storage HD that only housed media files, after doing so I can't boot Windows. It says it shutdown unexpectedly blah blah, sometimes it boots to the loading bar, but then I get a black screen. Any ideas?

I used to have this problem sometimes with WinXP. What I did was put the drive back in the system and sees if it boots up normally. If it does, in Windows, go to the device manager and uninstall the drive you want to take out.

Shutdown then physically remove the drive and sees if it Windows boots up again.

Hope this helps.
