I'm not. I hate web information that isn't in written form. That's the way I am. I don't mind funny cat pix or naked members of the opposite sex, but it's a waste of time for something like a recipe or a list of the best glucose meters.

I know lots of people are visual but lots of us aren't

I hate it when people put information in video form, rather than text. Why would I want to watch an hour long Youtube video when I could consume the same information in ten minutes by reading it? :colbert:

Once again, I completely agree with the awesome genius poster known as schneiderguy.

I'm a lot more visual than I used to be, probably due to all the computer time I've logged in the last several years.

Not sure whether I'm more visual than anything else, tho.

I'm generally visual, but I hate videos as an instruction tool. I do best on a system with icons, and have an easier time remembering where things are, and how to use them with visual cues. I have a hard time remembering command syntax, and many times have to look up even simple commands. Ironic since my preferred system is Debian.

Are you referring to like, visual lists? Like, "Here's a top ten. Each page has a photo of one of the ten, and some information about it."

I find them hit and miss - sometimes, it's more about the page views then anything, other times it seems appropriate. Sometimes, it makes it more bothersome if I simply want a detailed list.

For recipes - ..? Like, a wikihow or howitworks but for recipes? Not sure if I've ever seen such a thing. I've only known recipes as lists of ingredients, followed by directions. Pictures, sometimes, to help with detailed descriptions.
Or it could be full video, like cooking shows. I've never gotten a recipe from a video. Too much to follow along imho. But if they post the recipe, awesome.

Regarding your poll - I voted yes, because I am very visually oriented. I read and hunt for text for articles compared to video, but I rarely want to watch the video just to hear the story, when I could read it. I'm reading all the time online, be it getting lost on wiki, reading news, or reading nonsense (or something worthwhile, it does happen occasionally) on here. :p

But I do like seeing things, because, if I invest interest in something, I have very photographic memory. The important film, in this case, is that vested interest, that spark that makes me care. I used to be good at just memorizing pages from a textbook, but I think I had a lot of film back then. The internet didn't take over at that point just yet. Now I have too much stupid shit wasting film, and I think that spark of "caring" about something is what drives my brain to dump some of that stupid shit it knows it doesn't need to remember.

I know people who prefer CLI over UI for system management (be it PCs, managed switches, routers, etc) - but I have come to LOVE UIs.
Mainly because, like you, I cannot remember commands and their syntax if my life depended on it. Well, maybe then, if only one specific command and the syntax was simple. I've had to look up or fumble around guessing incorrectly for awhile, simple ones that I've done those exact same research/guessing steps to retrieve, countless times. :p
I don't need many visual cues at all to remember where an option here or there is.

No both option.. What a worthless poll.

I'm both some things I like to simply read like recipes, while others things I'd rather watch a video of.

I'm some kind of weird hybrid.

If I have never touched something physically, video is great. If I have already touched it, written instructions are great.

The can never, ever be swapped.

Oh yeah, youtube is the greatest thing ever for working on cars for example because "then take the clutch rod out and remove the clutchpack" is much more difficult to follow than seeing someone perform it.

Yeah, it's why I very rarely will consume video news. I can read in 60 seconds what it takes some blithering asshole 5 minutes to go over.

I hate when people omit basic things (or at least things they think are basic) from things such as this, in video OR in text. So damn annoying.

If I'm building my first pipe bomb, I want ALL the steps, not just your cut down version assuming this isn't my first rodeo. Can never be too careful! :p

Then..there is my favorite youtube instructional video of all time...

It depends on the subject. I'm very visual when it comes to food but, I like my recipes in Olympic format. I prefer tech info in written format and screw the pretty pictures. One of my pet peeves are books with maps that only show the areas mentioned in the story.

This. I immediately block all video and audio by default. It's almost always useless. Give me plain text.

It's one reason high school sucked so much for me. Just give me the books, let me go home and read them for a week, then test me. I do perfectly well that way. If you stand there and lecture, or assign groups, or give bs projects I'm lost and learning nothing.

I guess I'm about even between visual and written knowledge acquisition. When it comes to things that I have to do in the real world, I'm very hands on when it comes to learning. If I'm just taking in information that i might need to regurgitate at some later time, I'm much better when I read it than when I see it.

It's like I can know things about stuff I've done even when my brain hasn't translated that information into language yet. For instance I might be able to build something because I figured out how to do it through trial and error, but not be able to tell you how I did it right away because I never put it into words in my head while I was doing it.

If I need to know about something that happened, I'd be better off reading it. If I need to know how to make something happen, I'd be better off seeing/doing it.

I'm very much the same, especially with explaining how I did something. I figured out how to do something at work and I told my boss it was easy. She asked if I could write down how so others could do it later. Sure!

Took me five times as long to write it out than to do it and it ended up being over 100 steps.

She hasn't asked me to write anything like that since...
