I'm trying to install a CD Burner in my GF's PC and I'm not able to get the second IDE channel working :(

It's enabled in the BIOS and I can see no reason for it not working, the CD burner is on the IDE chain by itself and I have tried multiple IDE cables and multiple jumper configs on the drive.

Please..any assistance is appreciated.

EDIT:

Motherboard is an Asus p4s533-x motherboard

not able to get either 1 or 2 devices working on the chain, devices work on the primary ide chain

is there any software to test the functionality of on board ports? (grasping at straws but you never know)

If you tried moving the HD over and/or another piece and made sure the IDE cable (Black end to device-colored to Mobo) plus the jumpers are connected correctly with no response in the BIOS then my guess is that the Port is bad...

is she also running a SATA drive?

dont know if this applies to your mobo/chipset, but on IC7 (875P)

Quote:
Had a look at the user manual, page 2-17, it says that you have to enter bios and set up "OnChip Sreial ATA" to "SATA only/IDE" to make the ports work.. (Or combined mode, to be able to use the first IDE channel in addition for CDroms and such, you can NOT use the second IDE channel)
Look to page 3-13 for more info..

Actually you can use the "enhanced mode" to use all ports...

Nope, this mobo is SATA free

I'm going to get her a PCI IDE controller card and in the next month or so get her a new mobo/CPU
