Well how else do you expect them to be able to prevent you from claiming a rebate while returning the product?

exactly. This is common business practice and common sense.

Your recourse is to deal with the manufacturer warranty policy in that case. I fail to see the issue.

Don't try to abuse the (established) system and use common sense. This is a non-issue from the get-go.

In this case, you really should go through the manufacturer for an RMA. They should be more than willing to help you.
