There were so many horrible old NES games. Enough for James Rolfe to keep his AVGN show going for five years now. LJN produced at least half of them.

I'm almost glad I never owned an NES; I find nostalgia irritating. Most old games were not that good. Even the ones that were good for their time and important in the evolution of gaming would not be good by today's standards.

I'd take Zelda 1 over most of the crap produced now.
Zelda 2 I would throw into a surging river along with a bag of sewer rats.

And Im sure the same will be said about the PS3 in 20 years.

The NES was such a great system for its time. Most of its game are indeed unplayable nowadays, but back then it was the shiiiiit.

You never owned an NES?? No wonder you sound so naive.

If you honestly think that games like Super Mario Bros, Super Mario 3, Duck Tales, Mega Man, River City Ransom, Double Dragon, and countless others (especially platformers) "don't hold up well", that is just retarded. Those games are as addictive, enjoyable, and instantly playable today as they were 20 years ago.

Similarly retarded is trying to compare them with games 20+ years in the future. Like was said before, that will be said about every generation of game.
Sure, there was a lot of junk, a vast quantity of of average games, and a varying degrees of true excellence. But the truly great games have already stood the test of time, and will continue to do so.

which came first the game genie or battletoads

chicken and the egg : P

I had a Gameshark with my Gameboy. Pokemon was great with that. Messing around with different starters instead of the usual three to up/drop the difficulty. That was cool.

I dunno, but I sure as shit never got anywhere without infinite lives.

Isn't that just the truth lol. Damn those Battletoads levels irritated me. But kept going back. One game I liked for some reason though, was Festers Quest. o_O

But yea, even today, there are dozens upon dozens of old 8 bit action for me. Final Fantasy, Contra "Super C", Castlevania "Dracula's Curse"

And the list goes on and on. And my favorites, I still play to this very day.

That is what we need. A brand new Contra.

I go for the unpleasant reminder. I've never been much for nostalgia. Honestly, I have fond memories of games I used to play until I see them again. Games back then pretty much were horrible compared to today :) Of course I'm not nostalgic with old cars or music. I moved on form the hair band days and never looked back.

It's not retarded, it's just a matter of opinion. Some people love those old games, others don't. Not much reason for me to go back and play old games when I don't have any nostalgia for them. More recent games are better from my perspective. Not that newer is always better than older, but there's no question I'd rather play a game from the last 3 years than one from 20 years ago.

Similarly retarded is trying to compare them with games 20+ years in the future. Like was said before, that will be said about every generation of game.

I know that most games of today will seem just as primitive 20 years from now as NES games do today. I don't know if I'll care to go back and play a 2011 game in 2031. Probably not. I am not especially nostalgic for the games that I did play earlier in life (mostly GameBoy and Mac games since I didn't get a PC or a console until much later), with maybe one or two exceptions.

The point is some people are more nostalgic than others. I'm one of the less nostalgic people.
