The man accused of killing 77 people in a bomb-and-gun rampage in Norway last summer claimed as he went on trial for terrorism and murder Monday that self-defense justified his actions.
"I acknowledge the acts but do not plead guilty, and I claim I was doing it in self-defense," Anders Behring Breivik told a court in Oslo. The court recorded a plea of not guilty for him.
Prosecutors played a recording of a terrified girl phoning for help during the shooting spree that left 69 people dead, many of them teens and young adults. The audio was punctuated by constant firing in the background.
They also showed security camera video of the central Oslo bomb blast that killed eight people, images that participants in the trial watched with ashen faces.

It has not been confirmed whether or not any of the dead were wearing hoodies.

All 77 of them hurled Skittles at him before he opened fire.

In all seriousness, the options for him are sane or not sane, which is 21 years+ in prison or indefinite psychiatric detention.

So the piece of barf doesn't even have the conviction to stick with whatever sick message he was trying to send out and is now claiming that it was all just one, big misunderstanding. I bet it's times like these the Norwegians wish they had a harsher justice system.

Can't they just leave him on an iceberg or something?

Where did he mention religion?

Apparently we get to hear more, all of it, from him in the coming weeks. We'll see how important god and/or specific religions are to him then.

From what I have read, Breivik is probably not religious, just wants the presence and dominance of conservative christian culture because it is less conducive to the spread of islamic culture than a religious vacuum.

-Slacker-, did you read nothing of the case? Saying that he "lacks conviction" is laughable.

His fucking crazy and needs a hole in the ground. Sorry 77 is beyond the pale of rehab or worrying about motivations, for him at least.

Basically this is just an example of conservative defective thinking. They can justify anything because they just know.

A shot to the head would save the people of Norway a lot of money and anguish from hearing this killer express more of his repugnant thoughts...

The best was when he was demanding the media play his message to the world just because it needed to be heard. Also how he demanded Japanese doctors to examine him because they have a sense of honor.

He sees himself as a modern Templar, and uses Templar crosses and other symbols a lot.

They should just ship him to the US, the Tea Party would probably welcome him as one of their own.

I'm LOLing at the fact that the harshest sentence he can get is 35 years in prison. Remember that when some loathsome "human rights" activist tries to lecture the US about the death penalty.

He is insane. I think it clear. However, I understand Norwegian doctors have ruled otherwise. I find that unbelievable.

If you're capable of planning an attack that kills dozens of people then you are sane enough to be held responsible for your actions.

I bet a lot of people in Norway are wishing they had the death penalty.

article said:
Norway doesn't have the death penalty. If found mentally sane — the key issue to be decided in the trial — Breivik could face a maximum 21-year prison sentence or an alternate custody arrangement that would keep him locked up as long as he is considered a menace to society.

Can you imagine if this guy is walking the streets 21 years from now?
