Do you think its possible that we can have an incident like this here in the US? The anti-muslim rhetoric is pretty strong among our far right and we do have major lapses in our police and mental health programs. Maybe I'm over-simplistic in this thinking but its concerning.

You forget Oklahoma City?

As for the shooting, I'm amazed anyone could shoot as many people as he did, by himself.

I was to until I read some eye witness accounts. Apparently some 700 people were on that island and they had all just gathered to learn about Oslo when the gunman arrived. He was there for an hour or more so he had quite a lot of time to do this. Only surrendered once he ran out of ammunition.

And apparently according to the BBC news the max sentence he could serve is 21 years...which is completely ridiculous.

You can get an indefinite sentence also. I don't know how Norwegian law works with something like this, but they can keep you until you're cleared to leave by doctors, even if that's over 21 years.

The camp was organized for 13-16 YO's, maybe everyone just ran for their lives(I would for sure). It is very sad that he chose this location..

Heard on the news that the camp was mostly children of the "ruling class" (i.e. lawmaker children).

Very sad indeed.

The dude wanted a Muslim revolution yet attacks children that aren't Muslim. What a coward and asshole. Police should have just killed the motherfucker.

Christianity is no more or less hateful than Islam. My point is that people (especially Americans) are always quick to condemn Islam as a religion of hate without stopping to consider their own equally retarded beliefs.

The fact of the matter is that the vast VAST majority of people who practice Islam and Christianity are more interested in peace than hate. But terrorism and death are committed under the guidance of each of these religions frequently.

I'd say christianity is without a doubt less hateful than islam...though that isn't saying much. at the core of islam is hate and intolerance. sure, you can find similar instances in the bible, but not nearly as many, and most christians thankfully choose to be ignore these examples. we need muslims to start doing the same

Well, the labour youth group is very pro-palestinain, they held a pro-palestinian rally the day before. Plus he hates leftwingers/marxists, so it would make some 'sense' as to why he attacked them.

Why isn't this thread locked yet? I am in an OT thread about the Norway shootings, but the P&N folks are bringing their Israel and Palestine crap in here. It has nothing to do with the topic. Please take it back where it belongs. Thanks.

As an American, this next bit is...perplexing, for lack of a better word.

I know it's their country and their laws, but I find it difficult to accept a man could kill so many people and be back on the streets in two decades. I don't imagine many people would welcome him back into society after his release.
"Oh, you're the chap who shot all those kids? Sure, you can work here, it doesn't bother me in the slightest!"

In Canada technically the maximum sentences 25 years. But if you get the label of "dangerous offender" you will basically never get out of jail. They review your case every so many years but those labeled as dangerous offenders usually never get released. Its effectively life.

since life is all about them, they just can't help themselves. At least it's the same ones so if you just ban their names you can skip most of it.
