Is Norton software any good? For years I have used the anti-virus
software with no problems, But recently after building my new monster
PC I decided to go all the way and use all the main symantic packages
for ultimate security and maintenance. so far I am about to take a contract
out on any and all symantic personnel.(just kidding)But Norton IS..
about to be banished from my computer completely. I have a non standard hardware
configuration so Im not completly sure I am not causing my own problems so if anyone
can make any observations or suggestions based on my setup I would be in your debt.

basic system:
asus A7V and 1200 Mhz birdy
256 mhz mushkin high perf. Ram
hercules prophet GTS 2 PRO video
creative live x gamer 5.1 sound card
one IBM ata 100 45 gig HD (solo/master on pri.promise 100 port)
one IBM ata 100 30 gig HD (solo/master on sec.promise 100 port)
Kenwood 72x truex CD-Rom (solo/master on ide primary port)
Plexwriter 12/10/32A CD-RW (solo/master on secondary ide port)
400 watt sparkle pwr supply
all the fans in the world
all the latest drivers Ive been able to find
asus A7V 133 bios(and so far it works great)

setup:
Dual boot; win 98se on C:HD and win 2000 pro on D:HD

Problems;
Norton Utillities 2001 takes 2-3 tries to install on either OS,
it takes 2-3 tries to download updates off the web and then install them
If I configure it to auto monitor in the backround (on the winn 2000 D: drive)
win 2000 locks on startup
Even though I installed it on each drive with each OS individually If I want
to do basic services like de-frag,optimize,regclean etc. it always wants to
look at both systems/HDs no matter which one I run from (usually with poor results) Norton Internet Security
set it up the same in both OS/HD and it operates differantly in how it
handles web connection (yah I know this could be expected but maybe it shouldnt be)
The on screen prompts are wearing me out. If I just tell Norton to use default
settings and to auto setup rules I seem to be dangerously close to having a
wide open connection (little or no security)
If I manually set the settings where I like them (for active X and java applets
and cookies and then try to manually set rules I spend more time working with Norton
then I do surfing.
Differances between performance on differant OS/HDs mainly comes down to how
Norton deals with secure sites, I do a lot of buying on the web; (I bought all the
parts for this PC off the web) Norton Security causes GPFs on win 98 C: drive
when I ask for a secure connection to buy a product at a site but win 2000 D: drive
has no problem at all.
Ive read the manuals cover to cover and while I dont think of myself as stupid
I just dont get it. The Norton tech service is not an option; online tech support
seems to consist of FAQs that are pretty basic and telephone tech support is a pay
by question service that doesnt even give you one free call or one free (pick your
time period)and after paying nearly 100 bucks for 3 applications (I also have Ghost)
I refuse to pay long distance rates to wait extendid periods of time to pay for
tech service that is probably not much better then the service ive already had.

These and more are the problems I am having, any help or comments would be appreiated.

I didnt intend for this post to turn into a rant so Ill quit venting and see if some
knowledgable soul wiil help me out OR AT LEAST TELL ME I WAS A SUCKER FOR EVER
BUYING SYMANTIC and then Ill go in a diff. direction
Thanx in advance
