you can get it for free, no rebates, if your ISP is Comcast. I agree that the 2010 version is much better than the bloated pigs of the recent past.

Um, why in the world would you not use MS security essentials?

Norton is the worst w/ bloatware and other crap that you don't know about which runs in the background.

I think Comcast offers a version of Norton 360 which is not the same product (and obviously, it is not available to everyone). I do use it on my HTPC though.

Fixed

And it would also be nice if SociallyAware could tell us what specific bloatware and background processes we should be aware of.

NIS 2009 and 2010 are MUCH better than previous versions of Norton. Bloatware is much less. I trust NIS more than MS Security Essentials.

:) Point taken.

The real problem with the latest versions have to do with uninstalling it cleanly, which is practically impossible. I've experienced a very low success rate, you're generally have all sorts of leftover registry entries which cause popups when booting or running certain programs.

It's bad enough that norton has released their own 'registry cleaner' to pick up all the crap their uninstaller leaves behind.

Norton/Symantec is one the best AV products on the market. Easily in the top 2-3. AV Comparatives provides very good tests of AV products. VB100 provides good info too, but is not free.

I love how some people have no idea about new versions of the software so they just say they hate it based on previous versions.... way to go

And even so, if you dont like the product its still a hot deal. Thats over 50% off. Thanks for the deal OP.

according to Antivirus Ware, Norton was ranked #1. Check this link and watch the video, read the review. Personally, i been using AVG for years, never had a problem.. but to each his/her own.

I've heard this before. Yeah, every few years norton *might* come out with a half-decent product but I've been consistently burned by them over a ~10 year period.

It's sorta like AOL - I really don't care if they've slightly improved their product, they've made their crap business practices evident and I'm not willing to take the risk.

Besides, norton in itself is a virus. So what now?

You wouldn't happen to work for norton would you?

All these people spewing obscenities and making useless blanket statements about how bad this product is: Do you have anything constuctive to contribute? Like mention an alternative product that you believe is better?

For a vast majority of users, a solid AV product that

1) has been highly rated by MULTIPLE reviewers,
2) costs next to nothing,
3) installs in under a minute,
4) requires almost no hands-on maintenance

is a good deal.

Lol.

Honestly, the best form of antivirus is an informed user who does not have admin rights. As to actually applications, we use McAfee and it has taken our once okay/mediocre systems and turned them into crap.

I've had bad experiences with both Norton and McAfee, enough so that I refuse to spend money on Antivirus when things such as:

MSSE
AVG
AntiVir
Avast

Are all available for home users for free, and haven't made anywhere near the drag on a system that Norton/McAfee etc. has in the past.

And to the poster suggesting that hanging on to past problems is essentially ignorant... well, if I get burned by Sapphire, do you think I give a crap that their card scores 1% better than someone else's. I'd rather give my business to someone who has done a good job of making me happy/not pissing me off.

Granted, my last experience with Norton was some time ago, but to inundate a standard joe user with pop-ups, etc. And to make a product effectively worthless after 1 year is up, IMO, is just raping the customer. You pay for it once, and then you have to give them your money all over again next year. Why do that when you can just use a freely available product that doesn't stick it to you every chance they get.

My 2 cents anyway.

EDIT: To the OP, good deal though. Definitely a good price for what sounds like an improved product.

Here's something constructive:

Norton has consistently sucked (in detection, resource use, nagging users after 12 month period is up then borking your system if you go to another product) for a 10 year period.

Anyone that does ANYTHING in IT has dealt with these issues for such a long period of time that most of us won't touch anything symantec OR mcafee.

So yes, maybe - just maybe now that it's 2010 they have come out with a product that fixes all of this crap but personally I don't buy it.

Either way, MS security essentials does a better job, also detects spyware, and is FREE. So there's my 'constructive post' combined with a 'better solution'

So while this deal may be hot (thanks OP for trying to help out) it's still a CRAPPY company pushing a *likely* CRAPPY product.

Seriously... Have any of you norton pushers ever had to remove an expired version of their product?? It's a total nightmare! It says a lot that both norton and mcafee have had to release 'uninstallers' that help pick *some* of the BS entries they add back out. Sounds like a virus to me.

Microsoft Security Essentials:

1) has been highly rated by MULTIPLE reviewers,
2) costs nothing,
3) installs in a few minutes (does this even really matter?)
4) requires no hands-on maintenance

I don't work for Symantec if that's what you mean, Norton is one of there products, not the name of the company. I've tried and seen just about every AV app there.

I prefer the "suite" not just the AV by itself.. for example AVG Free AV is just ok, but there Internet Security suite does a good job and it's not intrusive or requires a lot of system resources. The free ones generally suck.

Norton 2010 is a lot better than earlier versions. If you need more proof, check out what pcmag says and no i don't work for them either :D

There is a review of NIS 2011 Beta on PC World website.

Notice that NIS 2011 will be available for free for users with valid subscription to NIS 2010. In fact, if you have a valid subscription of NIS 2006 or later, you can upgrade to 2010 for free.

Yeh, it is Norton 360 with Comcast branding, the version numbers even match up with Norton 360. I am using it now, excellent security product and Symantec Security products post 2009 are extremely lean and light on system resources.

I've been using norton for a few years now. Every year around the time to renew I find a good deal on a new subscription with rebates to bring the price way down especially if you already own norton you get a rebate for being a repeat user. I think I paid $10 after rebates this year to renew. I think in '08 or '09 they nailed it as far as being a light, fast, effective product and never looked back. It is IMO by far the best out there.

Any thing that has a dedicated "Removal Tool" for when things go wrong, is a big no-no in my book.

Your post is neither constructive nor useful. You have no data to back up any of your assertions. Your personal opinion does not create facts. Go troll somewhere else, or find some data to backup your poorly researched, uninformed opinions.

Any thing that has a dedicated "Removal Tool" for when things go wrong, is a big no-no in my book.

So you would rather have AV/AS software that has something go wrong, and then not have a way to fix it (or have to manually hunt through program files, appdata, sys32, and the registry) because the manufacturer didn't offer a removal tool? Kaspersky, Trend, McAfee, Webroot, and Symantec all have removal tools. Is all of their software bad because of that? Removal tools aren't just for when the software screws up; there's this little thing called user error that good programmers plan for.

When Symantec fixed the Norton product line in 08 (for the 09 version), I didn't believe it either until I tried it. And once I tried it I never looked back. It works, it works well, and it doesn't slow down your system as much as its competitors. If you're in doubt, they have free trials if you download their software (with the intention of 'upgrading' via the support section of the site) and skip entering a key. If you decide to keep it you can just buy it and enter in the key, no hassle.

And no I don't work for Symantec, I just work with a bunch of people who all cry about Norton and none of them have tried using the new version either.

For anyone interested, Frys.com has it for $4.99, after a $25 MIR and $20 upgrade MIR (plus tax, where applicable). Slow free shipping, or take $3.69 off of faster shipping (that's what they figure the value of their free shipping to be). For me, was a couple bucks more to upgrade to ground, ~$5 more to upgrade to 2-day.
