norton ghost question.. swapping drives

my operating system is on a 40 gig hd.. partioned into 10 a 30g..... i wanna copy the system files on a diff 10 gig drive...and plan to use that as my system drive then use the 40 gig on a diffrerent computer. whats steps do i do... do i format the 10gig ntfs first? im really confused.. 1st time to use ghost... help please
