Norton Disk Doctor reports same error every time

Hi,

Recently I had to replace the hard disk on my 4-year old Dimension 4100 (the new disk is a Maxtor, if it makes any difference). I reinstalled all the original software (Windows ME) and the same utilities package I had before...Norton System Works 4.0. After a while I got around to running Norton Disk Doctor, and it found an error that goes something like this:

"The boot area on this drive contains invalid information about the drive's free space. Would you like to correct this error?"

I click the Yes button, but this same error is reported everytime I run Disk Doctor, even if I run it again right after clicking the Yes button to supposedly fix the problem.

I've checked for viruses, Trojans, etc., and my machine is clean. When I run ScanDisk, it doesn't report any problems. So what is going on? Has anybody else had this problem, and did you figure out what was up? If not, can any suggest another forum, etc. where I might get help. I already tried the Symantec knowledge base, and couldn't find anything there.

Thanks.

hmmm....did you put in a drive that is greater than 137 gigs? maybe the older norton's can't pick that up...is the drive showing the full size in disk management?

did you format it FAT or NTFS?

I'd think if scandisk wasn't seeing a problem, then ndd needs to be updated to a later version...

No, it's an 80 GB drive. Yes, the size of the disk shows up correctly. I formatted it FAT32, like it was with the old hard drive. My Norton System Works (of which NDD is a part) is from 2001. I've gotten all the updates for it that there are from the Symantecs web site, so it seems to me it should work ok. It worked just fine before, and the only difference now is the new hard drive.

Thanks.

It's been a while since I last used Norton Utilties, but I think I was seeing the same error Disk Doctor error message with the System Works 2002 version. If I remember correctly, the error would come up every time, regardless if it was fixed or not. Finally, I just ignored it and moved on.

Yeah - Norton DD can't do anything in XP. Use Chkdsk.
