This week (9/17-9/23) at CompUSA:

Norton Antivirus 2006 by Symantec FREE after rebate
Norton SystemWorks 2006 by Symantec FREE after rebate
Norton Antivirus 2006 / Norton Ghost 10.0 Bundle by Symantec FREE after rebate

and another good pick:

Spy Sweeper 3 Pack by Webroot Software, Inc $9.99 after rebate

ugh @ rebates...they deposite your money in an account which they collect interest on for 2 months before sending you a check if you're lucky. Or in many cases they tell you "you forgot to send the UPC" and meanwhile you have a box in front of you with a UPC cut out because you sent it. no thanks...

That's just me

I've owned (Symantec/Norton) Antivirus, Firewall, Internet Security, etc. for years and i'm to the point of asking myself why I keep buying that junk.

There are others that do a better job and i'm not talking McAffee either.

Some are actually Freeware.

So what do you use now?

I tried McAfee... it seems each product out there has it's own database and therefore detects different problems.

AVG (Grisoft) free anti virus
Zonealarm free firewall
PowerQuest Drive Image 2002 ; waiting for an imaging software compatible with Vista to be released to upgrade to

I've been using Systemworks for a long time, don't really know how it compares to the others (free and not). The one thing is, once you paid for it, you can get it for free for the rest of your life it seems if you pay attention to the rebates.

I will also say, Symantec is by far the Fastest company in paying rebates. Usually, I get the rebate before the credit card bill is even due, 3 weeks usually.

I don't know, I mean everyone swears by the favorite virus scanner whether it's free or not, what it comes down to is I want access to a large updated database and not have the software take up a lot of system resources. I've been places where the company policy was to stick with one brand and it ended up burning them later, ie Panda at one place couldn't detect a virus that Norton clearly identified and removed. I have Norton, McAfee, PC-cillin, etc... and so what I tend to do is install one on each computer (since you can't typically have them all installed at once) and then set each computer to scan each other's drives. It's kind of scary all the differences because not every program detects and protects from 100% of everything.

I don't recommend Norton, ever. Ghost is the only halfway decent thing they make. You can find everything else freeware and still better.

Yea ghost is still good. Not the 2003 ver but the ver 10 that still comes with 2003. Take a look at the virus testing website. Norton came in way below some free ones. We have norton corp ver on 100 pc's here and have been clean for a few years so it isn't bad. Just not so sure its so great anymore. I like the idea of useing diff ver on different pc's at home. Play the strength through diversity card. Hopefully if you get nailed at least 1 pc is still running to help you fix the others.

Not any one Virus Protection Software is clearly the best. None of them give 100% protection. Read comparison reviews and make the best decision for your situation.
