Norton AntiVirus 2004 crippling harddisc performance?!

When Auto-Protect is enabled, my HD is a lot slower than when it is not disabled. I understand, why this is so, but what i don't understand is, why this doesn't happen, when i use Norton AV 2003, but it does with 2004...

What alternatives are there to Norton products? What is the best overall virus protection?

Perhaps NAV2004 is performing more rigorous checking than NAV2003 is?

Try poking around the auto-protect options to see if there's some way to control it. Also check to see if there have been any updates to the program, just in case it's a bug.
