Whenever I try to install, i get two error messages. The first one says that LiveUpdate can't install, the second one is a general error and won't allow me to install the whole program. Any ideas as to why this hasn't worked? I've always been able to install it after formatting my hard drive. First time this has happened. THanks.

You may already be infected with a virus. Norton won't install on an already infected computer.

Here is a place you can do a scan from. You may have klez, it likes to screw up Norton. One quick way to tell if it is Klez is to go to Start menu-> Run > msconfig, look on your startup tab and if you see and process/program with "wink.." or similar you have Klez. There is a specific cleaner for it from symantec.com that works pretty well if you run it in safe mode.

Thanks for the site, the program detected four viruses on my computer, two of which Norton never detected in the past. However, I still cannot install it. Also, I could not run 'msconfig' in my run window. I'm running Windows 2000, is there another command? THanks.

I think Win2k is the only OS besides 95 and NT 4.0 that you cannot run msconfig. Anyway, if Klez was one of the viruses, you can go to symantec.com and do a search on their virus encyclopedia and then somewhere they have instructions on getting Norton Antivirus functional again. Hope this helps, good luck.

Klez was not one of those viruses found from the scan. Are there any other reason for why Norton won't work?? Thanks for your help.

Try uninstalling it from add/remove programs if it even shows up there. Then look for "Norton Antivirus" and "Symantec" directories in your Program Files directory, if they are there delete them and then try reinstalling Norton. Also, what viruses did you have?

you can goto the msdos mode in win2k and type edit msconfig.sys to modify that file. did you format your computer because you found a virus or just because it hasn't been formatted for some time now? did you just do a normal format or did you wipeout the partition and start from scratch?

If you just recently started to reinstall stuff and don't mind starting over you might want to take a break and start over by doing a fdisk to wipe the current partition and create a new partition they do a format/u. You might want to take the cmos battery out for a few sec and even reset the bios and do all the settings from scratch over but if you don't want to go through all this then you might want to call up or email symantec and ask their tech support for help for faster tips.
