I have been running the Beta versions of the NAV 2009 for a couple weeks now on my old test laptop (a 1.4 Ghz Gateway solo1450 that is pretty slow) and so far I am impressed. Symantec has reduced the memory requirements at least on my system to under 15 meg. There is now also a gauge on the main screen that shows how much CPU usage for NAV and system usage. Scan speeds seem muck quicker and there are more options that in the past to configure how and what it does rootkit scanning and advanced heuristics are now available. There is also a silent mode setting that will allow you to shut off background updating, active scans and notifications when you don't want to be interrupted. I love the insight module that adds files to a trusted list and speed up the scans even more. there is now what they call pusle updates that can be turned on or off that provides for virtually constant updates and at least for me I do not notice any performance hit. I know this comes off a bit like advertising but I do not work for or have any affiliation with Symantec I just wanted to put this out as an option and for discussion and as a small attaboy to Symantec for listening to and seemingly addressing some common complaints. It wil be interesting to hear your comments and also to see how it fairs when tested by a/v comparatives and the like.

They're probably making better use of the antivirus API's that microsoft started providing a long time ago. Unfortunately, that means the antivirus interfaces more closely with the kernel... so the antivirus itself eventually becomes the best vector of an attack.
