northwood to replace an 845 pent 4?

845 & 850 come in both flavors: Socket 423 & socket 478. Northwood only comes in a socket 478 package while the previous 2GHz CPU was sold in both types. The new socket (478) was created for the Northwood and the last generation of P4s only used it to smooth the transition to the Northwoods. Hope that's descriptive enough 🙂
 
Yea, just take the HSF off of the system in question, and if the socket/CPU is really small then it's S478 and can use Northwood's. If it looks similar size to a Socket A, then nope, You're stuck with Williamette.
