I'm running a P4 2.0A with the stock HSF on an ASUS P4B266. My idle temp at the moment is 41C.

Here are some pics of how my room is set up:

Is the current position of my computer bad for air flow?

Nice setup GT! I'll post my pics later.

How are you getting your cpu temp? The only way I can is through my digital doc and its reporting 22idle not overclocked and 25 idle when overclocked.

tex,
Are you running a water cooled system???

Then I doubt those temps are correct even for a p4 northwood...

Maybe the idle is correct what does it hit at doing full load?

Unfortunately, digital doc thermistor's have hard times getting good (or even moderately good) readings on a p4 chip. The digital docs with an amd chip can touch the side of the core, and can give reasonable (not highly accurate, but reasonable) readings. On a p4, i don't see how that's possible unless you rip off the IHS, in which case the reading will still be only reasonably accurate.

I understand your skepticism. The position of the sensor for the digital doc 5 is face down on the side of the chip's own heat spreader with the wire taped to the heatsink. It isn't perfect, but I'm very sure its a good reading.

Duvie, no I do not have a water cooled system but a very very powerful fan system.

Link

I also have an 80mm black delta fan on an all copper bottom heatsink with artic II silver

So you can see I do have the cooling. As soon as asus fixes their cpu temp board problem, I'll get a reading from it as well.

It is fine. Just make sure you're pulling air in from the front and dumping it out the back. You don't want to pull any air in from the back as it will get hotter back there with no fresh air circulating.

When I get a digi cam, I'll post a pic of my setup too. ;)

I have an Antec SX 1040 case with two rear fans blowing out (plus the PSU fans), and two front fans blowing in. P4 2.0a on an Asus P4T-E mobo using a Thermaltake HSF.

My Idle CPU temp is 29.5c @ 2.0 and 31c @2.2

On Asus mobos, you can see your mobo and CPU temps in the BIOS. Go to Power, and it should be down below under "mobo status" (or something like that... my memory sucks).

I TRIED installing Asus' motherboard monitoring software that came with the mobo, but XP got hosed after that. I'm not sure if it was the software, or the overclocking that did it. But I don't need the software, so I'm not chancing it again.

Let me add that I keep my house a bit cooler than other people do. My thermostat stays at 68 during the day, and 65 at night. The temps above were taken during the day.

GTAudio.. same setup here as well..

Asus P4B266 Rev 2.02
2.0A Ghz OEM w/ cheap $9.00 Coolermaster heatsink/fan combo

40C IDLE, default speed

Doesn't this board have problems with the CPU temperature being locked in @ 40C all the time?

not exactly...i'm running a P4 1.5 on the ASUS P4B266-C board, and my idle temp reports 40c (never goes lower), but it has gone up to 49c at full load for several minutes.

so i wouldn't say it's "stuck" at 40c per say, it just doesn't seem to like to go lower.

Is that really you Texmaster?;) What power supplies and cases are you all using? Tex, I knew you said a 400w was good for overclocking. How high are you overclocking right now and with what voltage? I want to go northwood either when I get my tax refund or in a few months.

Wow! That Thermaltake HSF makes a huge difference. I doubt that extra fan in the front make a huge difference as I pretty much have the same case.

#1 Its not a mess. There is a clear air channel around the cpu up to the upper fans blowing out. I even got some cry ice to follow the smoke to make sure it was maximized.

Every cable is rounded or enclosed.

I promise you, my airflow is better than yours ;)

#2 The fans are not mounted, they are hung inside with rubber which means there is ZERO vibration from the fans as they run.

#3 The entire case is filled with a noise dampening material

#4 The entire thing is enclosed in a enormous baffling system. You would be VERY suprised how quiet it is :)

Next time, ask more questions than making exclamations. You might not know the whole story :)

Yes, but mine is on the floor, and my house is already pretty cool. It's cooler at the floor than at the thermostat. I'm sure it's around 64 degrees floor level in my office.

I also think my thermostat is off a few degrees. 68 feels like 65 or lower sometimes. Damn Honeywell.

Ya. I HIGHLY recommend any P4 overclocker to go with a 400PS.

I have 431PS myself.

<< How high are you overclocking right now and with what voltage? I want to go northwood either when I get my tax refund or in a few months. >>

Not a problem.

I can even tell you pretty accuratly what you can expect from a 2.2

On an i850 without underclocking the ram, I hit 2.6 max with max voltage, v1.85

On my i845, I'm a scardy cat. 1.67v is the highest I've tried and that takes me to 2.7ghz.

And Here is a shot of my computer room :)

Here's an idea. I don't think CPU temps mean anything unless you also know the ambiant temp and/or case temp too.

I mean, I could open the window in my office, and let sub-freezing temps in. Then my CPU would be REALLY cool :)

Nice G85, Tex. I got one of those. How do you like it?

What monitor is that?

Oh wow, a jugermeister (sp?) man!

BTW, who took a crayon to your ACS speakers? :D

Yup. Also doesn't mean much because the measuring methods vary so greatly. I'm sure there's a biig difference between the reading from a internal diode and any kind of external probe.

Texmaster,

That's a nice setup there! I've always said once the P4 hit 2.5GHz, I'd be interested, and that time seems to be fast approaching if not here already. Up here in Canada, the price difference between P4 and AMD is really closing (except for the top-of-the-line P4 which is just a ridiculous price) and RDRAM is about the same price as DDR. So I'll spent an extra $100 so I don't have to worry about any VIA headaches!

AmusedOne,

That's a good point too. Everybody should state their ambient temperatures and whether they have a fan in the room that circulates the air.

GTaudiophile,

If you have a thermometer handy, you should try measuring the temperature where your computer is now (make sure it has been off for a while), and on the other side of that desk near the window. It might lower the temperature a tad bit if you moved the computer over to that side of the desk and put your subwoofer (or whatever the box is that is obstructed by the chair in pic #1) where your computer now is.

At the moment, my CPU temp is 41C and my mobo temp is 26C (78F). My room temp is in the low 70s I'd say. Switching the sub and computer might be a good idea.

My 2.2 @ 2.6 runs 33c/I/38c/L.........or at least that's what MBM says....;)

I'm at 2.6 on a Abit TH7II-RAID (i850) at 1.6V!:)

I also just completed a system with an Asus P4S333 and a 2.2. Haven't had time to do much B/M'ing or checking temps. with the nice little ice storm we've been having............;)

Your room is about 5 degrees warmer than mine... probably more.

BTW, I also have four RIMs (1024MB) instead of two. That's gotta make my case temp a degree or two warmer.

Nothing but a crap load of rain here in central IL. It's been raining steady for two or three days now. I've been dreading the possibility that it might just lower a degree or two, and i'll be living in sheet ice-ville.
