I picked up the Rev 2.0 Northwind GFD for $29.99 back in June and it was definately a bargain at that price. For anyone who's not overclocking their Slot-A Athlon, pick one of these up!

Did anybody get their orders or a shipping confirmation yet? I got the initial order confirmation but haven't heard anything since. (I'm referring to orders placed at the Northwind site.)

Thanks,
Jason

I just got mine today (Saturday) I ordered about a week ago. Seems my 650 Mhz Athlon won't make it past 750 at 1.75voltage
Any suggestions on getting it up higher?

apparently it makes funny beeps if I try any voltage higher than 1.85 such as 1.95 or 2.05 so those are probably out of the question. 800 will boot up at 1.85 but after about 10 mins locks up.

I am having a Golden Orb sent to me right now but after ripping (literally) the crap out of my athlon to get the gold finger on, I'm not sure I want do the same to get a new heat sink fan on unless its really going to be worth it.

Who ever said it was easy to get that damn top off.

<<Edit 10/10/2000 10:19 PM EST >>
I got my Athlon setup to run stable at 800Mhz now from 650 with an extra case fan screwed in overtop the Heatsink/fan combo already on there (Factory Heatsink/Fan still) I will try the new Golden Orb when I get it and see if I still need the Case fan over it. I still can't close my case because the heat still builds up enough to lock up the system.

Hopfully the Golden Orb will let me reduce voltage too but we shall see.
Weird thing is CPUIdle doesn't work with this Athlon setup. The HLT command's do not effect the athlon's CPU temp. keeps semi cool at 98.6 degrees F but 100.0+ when gaming.

What is a gfd? For those of us in the intel world, hehe... I'm going AMD soon I hope.

EDIT: oh, gfd = gold finger device? Coolio.

Got mine from Northwind today (Tues.) I dunno if you guys sprang the extra $5 for USPS Priority, but I didn't. My total cost was $18.75 and it cam in a legal size envelope with invoice, instructions, and a fair amount of wrapping on the device. It was pretty funny actually, I had no idea what it was until I opened it.

My Athlon 500 is at 650 right now, I'm running the Prime95 torture test and it's doing great. I had to bump the voltage to 1.85 to go above 550. The case on mine was pretty easy to get off, just used a little brute strength after I pried it apart enough to get my fingers in there. The coldplate doesn't look like it'd be too difficult, but you'd have to be really careful and patient to pry off those little clips. I just cleaned off my HSF and coldplate (took off the little foil square too) and reapplied some heatsink compound. I am kinda curious to see what speed the core is, and since that would require removal of the coldplate, maybe I'll do it someday. Judging from my numbers, I would guess 500 though :(.

Anybody that needs a GFD should order on of these from Northwind. You can't beat the price and it works!

Guy's I have a atholon 600 with the heatsink with dual fans. Once I pry this thing apart and install the GFD will I be able to still use the heatsink and fans? If I can't what will I have to use for cooling?

Donuts: If you want to use the same Heatsink and fan you currently have you will need to just remove a section of the casing. You won't have to completely remove the casing unless install some kind of cache speed adjuster. I ended up having a hell of a time with a larger solder iron. I recommend finding a smaller tipped one.

Yeah, Donuts, you should have no trouble. The front of the casing is the heat transfer plate/coldplate and the back is just plastic. You can pop the whole plastic part off and leave it that way, or just cut out enough of it to access the "goldfingers". They are located on the top right of the PCB if you're looking at the front (at the fans.) I just left the back off mine, it'll be easy enough to get back on if I ever want to, and maybe it helps cool the PCB down a little.

Jason

P.S. - Doesn't Northwind have a "no solder" cache speed adjuster kit too? After some looking, here it is. Here's how to notch the case. Here's how to remove it.
