I'm a Northern California (well, Bay Area) native, and I love it here. But, within the next 2-4 years we'll be moving somewhere else, probably North Carolina. The housing prices are just too expensive for my wife and I to ever own a home. It really sucks, because I'm California born and raised, most of my family is here, and I don't want to leave, but I have no choice.

Me too.

Cost of living is very high. I did a calculation a couple months ago. If I wanted to afford a fairly new 900k home (which is pretty avg), I would need to pull in at least 110k to live comfortably with a few extras such as high speed internet, cell phone, and going out to dinner every now and then.

I've been there too. Nice places all of them.

But I do NOT envy californians of any type.
In SF they pay 4 million bucks for a shack on the waterfront.
And they're PROUD of it!

Mill Valley wasnt too bad, but still not a good deal compared to anywhere else in the US.
And if you really think california is so much better than florida I say: "Do it. Have fun."

I think you have taken it too far, its not THAT bad. Although it is very expensive per square feet, I doubt you will find a better view and neigborhood.

No Cal has all the scenery its absolutly my favorite place on this earth.. now.. if only the average cost of living was under 800k a year to live anywhere nice there...

had to move back to Texas couldnt afford to live there.
Actually the further North you go the cheaper it gets though it also gets more rural.

yah bro but im an IT geek... all the jobs are in Silicon Valley/San Fran

My grandma lives in Watsonville which used to be rural now its turning into prime real estate... my mom lives in Woodside (above Palo Alto) and her tiny 4 br home is worth 4.5 mil.. and its not even half as nice as a 200k home here in Houston...

I just couldnt survive out there..

Actually Santa Clara Valley (the heart of Silicon Valley) started sucking when the Tech Boom took off and the quality of life there got worse as time went on. In the 70's and 80's that was the greatest place to live in California and reasonably affordable. All sorts of people from other states and countries moved there to find fortune, the cost of living went up and the place became over crowded. San Jose use to be a great place before that, now it's L.A. jr with wall to wall people, monumental traffic jams and real eatate ridiculously priced. The place now reeks of Yuppie Scum!

You thought wrong.
Thats the price being asked for a hovel near the waterfront. Tiny little places that usually dont even have a garage.

My mom fell in love with San Francisco after her law firm sent her on a little mission.
She wanted to transfer and started looking at the housing market. Then she changed her mind.

Waterfront proeprty is the most expensive property in any area with water. You can live in SF, or any other coastal town, a lot cheaper if you *don't* get a house on the beach.

I like it here, but yes, it is more expensive here than in many places. I moved here 19 years ago, for a 6 week construction job...and haven't left yet!
For about 3 years, this was my view at work every day:
SF Skyline

Mt. Tam

GOTTA love working on the water everyday...

Not true in San Francisco. Some of the cheapest houses in the city are out by Ocean Beach.

The most expensive bits of town are on hills with views of the water - not right by the water

I thought right. I have family that live on Lombard St that in the north waterfront. They have a small 1500 sqft place with a great view and they paid around 700k last year. If you do not believe me then here link to other waterfront real estate

Why you think it so expensive to buy property in Nor. Cal? Because people love to live here. You can get to beach, mountain, snowboarding, and different temperture range in couple hours of drive. Where else can this be done?

about anywhere in Western Oregon/Washington/Bristish Columbia

Nice to be on the left coast 🙂

Uhhh no, because you get rain every freaking day basically. I have friends from Oregon, and they will tell me how wonderful it is to have so little rain here in NorCal.

Then you have people from So. Cal saying that NorCal is the stormiest coldest place ever....

I personally believe that Nor Cal is a wonderful place and So. Cal is my getaway tropical area if I want, but I honestly prefer actual damn trees rather than palm trees, whcih is why norcal rules.

HELLA RULES.

Ya'll should come up to the real northern california....i'm talking mountains, wilderness...that sort of thing. That's what I love most about where I live.

However, our weather here in the valley I live in sucks most of the time. Right now, summer....5 months without significant rain, temperatures regularly at 100+. Winter is cold and rainy a lot. Spring and fall can be pleasant though.

This is what i'm talkin about. 🙂

The secret in Northern Cali has been the Sacramento suburbs. Places like Fair Oaks and Rocklin. 1 1/2 hours to Tahoe or Napa, 2 hours to SF, etc. And you're living in a beautiful area with foliage and trees busting out everywhere and lots of hills unlike the rest of the flat valley. Very solid local economy with lots of state jobs.

And the kicker is, housing was dirt cheap here up until a couple years ago.

Portland (I live in the Suburbs) averages 36" annually, This NOAA map suggests much of Western NorCal gets a fair share of precipt as well? We get very little rain after the Rose festival in early June through October.

I thought that it wasn't the amount of rain, but how often it rains or it is cloudy/overcast when people talk about how it's depressing to live in the Pacific Northwest.

Northern California gets a lot of rain during winter.

The overcast weather in the winter sucks and is depressing excepting for the powerful Eastern Pacific storms that bring plenty of great surf on the Northern Coast, keeps it green and excellent skiing in the Cascades...its a love/hate thing 🙂

if you think that's good, you should see the Sierras, or lightning striking Mount Shasta at dawn. Northern California is simply the best combination of "real life" cities/jobs, amazing scenery, good weather, great beaches, etc in the nation. only downsides are the exorbarant cost of living and traffic in the Bay Area, where many of the jobs are.

BTW, I live on Highway 1. Ocean FTW.

all true, and i considered moving there once, but i could never live in a place where 100 degrees is considered a cool summer day.

just like to make a quick addition... even had a nice flight back (aside from the screaming/puking kids)...

Flew right over Yosemite and Bryce Canyon... Never realized mono lake was so big 🙂

The Appalachian's are foothills...not real mt's.

I was born in San Fran, raised in Sacramento... moved down to L.A. when I was 16. Recently moved to Pittsburgh for grad school.

I gotta get back to Norcal...god how I miss it.

I live out by Ocean Beach and believe me, my cheap house is creeping very close to seven figures.

Still, this is one of the best places to live on this planet....

i often take for granted that i was born and raised in san francisco, but it really is the greatest area in the world... absolutely beautiful.. i'm glad you enjoyed your stay here aphex
