The South shall rise again?

Northeast loses 40% of House seats as people flee high-tax states

The Northeast, once the nation’s political engine that produced presidents, House speakers and Senate giants including the late Edward M. Kennedy, is losing clout in Washington as citizens flee the high-tax region, according to experts worried about the trend.

The Census Bureau reports that population growth has shifted to the South and the result is that the 11 states that make up the Northeast are being bled dry of representation in Washington.

Critics blame rising taxes in states such as Massachusetts and Connecticut for limiting population growth in the Northeast to just 15 percent from 1983 to 2013, while the rest of the nation grew more than 41 percent.

The biggest impact comes in the loss of congressional representation.

Deep in a recent report, for example, the American Legislative Exchange Council tabulated how the drop in population relative to the rest of the nation cut the region’s power in Washington. While the states from Pennsylvania to Maine had 141 House members in 1950, they are down to 85 today, a drop of some 40 percent.

California and Texas combined have more House representatives.

“This result is one of the most dramatic demographic shifts in American history. This migration is shifting the power center of America right before our very eyes. The movement isn’t random or even about weather or resources. Economic freedom is the magnet and states ignore this force at their own peril,” said the report.

Haha, ultra right wing advocacy organization says shift in trend is due to right wing policies. Gee, who would have guessed.

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the invention of air conditioning. Or the car. Or the highway system. Or any of those other factors that enabled both sprawl and living in extremely hot environments.

What's particularly funny is that they cite California as a place that has ballooned in size. Considering how frequently they refer to California as a high tax proto-communist state that makes it even better.

Stupid people like boomerang are always ready to be duped.

The problem is that these loons are fleeing there and infecting the rest of us with their leftist bullshit. Look at what they are trying to do to Texas.

You sound like the stupid one here. As if air conditioning just came out recently.

And California has most definitely not ballooned in size. My home state of Nevada has (and has gained seats because of it). Why? Because of people fleeing California.

The CBD gloats at the destruction of the American standard of living, lusting for the day when all Americans suffer from the creepy self loathing and backwardness that endures to this day in the Southern states. The egotistical mind built on vainglorious self pride is always filled with the evil of envy.

How can you be in a cornfield in Iowa when your home state is Nevada?

California went from 23 to 53 House seats in the 1950-2014 time period of the article, completely disproving the cheap and unsubstantiated claim of people fleeing because of high taxes.

High taxes, high cost of living, shitty weather, natural displacement of immigrant families from 80 years ago, immigration coming across our southern border vs through the east coast. There are many reasons why the NE is dwindling in population relative to the other parts of the country.

People are leaving NJ in droves. People are paying $6,000-12,000 in property taxes.

Guess when air conditioning became commonplace in the US? The 1950's.

California population in 1950: 10,586,223
California population in 2012: 38,041,430

Quadrupling in size sounds like ballooning to me, but I guess your mileage may vary. Did you read the OP? You might want to before saying a bunch of wrong things and calling someone else stupid.

Oh, I don't know. As the country degenerates into joblessness and poverty, we will start to see people fleeing to Mexico and Canada for a better life. The CBDs will then have a chance to sweep the nation and rename the country Pig Heaven and the anthem to 'Free at Last to Wallow in Our Own Shit'.

The #1 reason by a country mile is simply high housing costs and the resulting high standard of living. One thing the Northeast has done poorly is that they have far too many building regulations in place, especially considering the exploding demand for people that want to live here.

That being said, the Northeast is already so densely populated that it's simply not possible to grow at the same rate other places do. The Northeast Corridor alone has something close to 20% of the US population in 2% of the land area. Where would we put all the people?

California's taxes haven't changed a whole lot until the last couple of years. They've been pretty stagnant and not the highest.

And Nevada has gone from 160,083 to 2,758,931 in that same time (17 times the population). So, no, California isn't ballooning when compared to the states gaining seats.

Infrastructure is the big problem, in NYC for example you're talking subway lines that are already operating far above capacity. Building new lines is really hard and expensive because of the massive amount of infrastructure that's already present.

You're making a mistake of using a state with an extremely low starting population. Since 1950 the U.S. population has approximately doubled. California has grown at around twice that rate. Using a state that has high taxes and has added a lot of seats since 1950 is a laughable way to make this argument.

The op fucked up. It's pretty normal for him.

http://www.reviewjournal.com/news/retirees-fuel-nevadas-big-population-growth-census-shows

LOTS of old people are moving to Nevada because of the climate....

The state's population grew 35 percent from 2000 to 2010, ranking it No. 1 in the nation. But that number was dwarfed by the rising tide of residents older than 62, which ballooned by 54 percent. Even the oldest residents, those 85 and older, grew a whopping 78 percent.

The rise in senior citizens helped bump the state's median age from 35 to 36.3.
Much of that growth is fueled by retirees who are attracted to Nevada's warm climate, said Deb Jaquith, spokeswoman for the Nevada chapter of the American Association of Retired People.

"We get a lot of transplants from the Northeastern states who are looking for sunshine and are tired of shoveling snow," she said.
Count Ken Mahal among the snow-weary immigrants.

The 89-year-old president of the Nevada Seniors Coalition left Minnesota for Las Vegas in 1985 in large part because of the weather.

"One day I just said to Agnes, 'Let's head to Las Vegas,' " the retired architect said, referring to his wife, who died two years ago.

Besides the climate, Las Vegas also has Lake Mead to satisfy boat-happy Midwesterners and no income tax, which saved thousands of dollars, Mahal said.

"That's been a big draw to the retirement community," he said of the tax system.

"You're not working anymore, and you need to save money while enjoying yourself at the same time."

You're making the mistake of using California as reasons why the OP/article is incorrect.

So its OK for you to use a so called outlier but when I do it, its a mistake?

Fuck off.
