Northbrigde Fan question on IC7-G

I just received my IC7-G MOBO while replacing the stock cooling fan, I removed the northbrigde fan to see what was under it. Their is a white thin tape w/ a square cut out from it . My question is, is this tape necessary? because I removed it and cleaned it up. I'm just worried that it might be to keep the metal base off the little electrical contacts on the Northbrigde chip. If anybody can shed some light on this, please do, I'm in a holding pattern now until I find out if it's ok.

If you're worried about it, replace the tape, or cover the leads on the chip with some sort of insulator. You can be sure that if they didn't have a good reason to have it there, they wouldn' have gone to the expense of putting it on.

I't was more then I was willing to spend. Plus I'm converting over from an XP2500 & NF7-S that I purchased in May 03. Mama is starting to complain!!
